FLEXIBLE powerchair charging
systems
Do you want
better range and
very fast charging both at home & when out in your Car/Van for the
day?
Do you want to
help your Batteries Live Longer and
Perform Better? Do you need a
VERY Fast Top Up charge during the day so
you can go out later on in the evening "fully charged"? I have a life and
need all of these things.
|
|
Now I don't sell anything and have nothing to "push".
But am pretty knowledgeable about Batteries, Chargers
and Powerchairs! And its a good job I am because if I wasn't then the "limits"
imposed by the current Powerchair Battery technology would stop me doing all the
things I enjoy. Batteries are the weakest part of the chain in any Powerchair.
FREE ADVICE! If you are using anything with a heavy transformer
as a charger get with the game and throw it away NOW! Modern switch mode
digital chargers with multi stage charging algorithm built in are HUGELY better
and safer for your batteries even if the charger has a massive output. But
never put more amps through the tiny joystick charging port,
fit some proper Anderson
Connectors! Or you will damage something.
Do you ever wake up and realise you forgot to plug your tiny "all
night" 5 Amp or 7 Amp manufacturer supplied battery charger in? There goes
another fine day out! Or want to go out for a 10 mile "walk" with the Dog
in the evening (or to the pub/night club etc - or both) and then realise you
dare not try it because you have been shopping all day already and your
batteries are at rather less than their best? :(
You are not alone! It used to happen to me too! But I fixed the
problem. It just requires a little planning and some hard won knowledge!
But now I have various systems in place that cure all of the
above, and make my batteries last around twice as long in real terms before they
get replaced.
This is what I now do:
1. I can charge them up FAST at up to 100 amps
(although one battery at a time) from my van as I drive. Or while Parked with the motor
idling. The vehicles alternator does this for me via a
few simple connections. This means that whenever I get in and drive I
can charge the chair in about 30 mins to around 90 percent charged from pretty
well discharged...
In fact every time I drive I always plug in and get a free top up
even if only going a couple of miles. I like charged batteries! You never know
what may happen. Then do the other battery on the way back home. This leaves the
two batteries potentially in an unmatched state of charge. It does not matter if
you also do 5 (below) every night while you sleep!

2. I can do the same as above and charge
FAST at 100 Amps but from the OUTSIDE of the van. Via a
strategically placed external socket. Ideal if camping, in the sunshine, at an
airshow etc.
Here exactly the same as 1
3. I can Fast Charge at 30 Amps while at
home sat next to my computer or eating after a busy day in typically 1 hour to 90 percent+
charged, Ready for a busy night out.
Here
4. I can use my normal Powerchairs slow
5 or 7 amp charger overnight for a "normal" charge. This is of course
completely useless for a top up during the day as its too under powered. Unless
you have 7 or 8 hours to waste. But I no longer use this.
|
|
5. I do use an overnight 20 Amp charger
though. Actually its not really 20 amp but 10 Amp x2 It is in
fact two 12v 10 Amp 3 stage digital chargers built into one case! Both
outputs are completely isolated. Its really a Marine Deep Cycle / Gel battery
charger. Page Here Soon!
Although it is ideally suited to charging wheelchair batteries,
albeit at some financial cost. Waterproof too! But its always better to charge
each 12v battery independently than to treat both as a single 24v "series"
string of batteries as the "cheap" standard wheelchair charger that comes with
your powerchair does. Your batteries will love you for it.
It ensures that one battery isn't at a different state of charge
than the other every time you charge them up. A normal single 24v charger as you
are currently using, only sees the total voltage of both batteries. So cuts off
when it sees the "correct" finished voltage. But that's often with one battery
overcharged and one undercharged. Both are bad for your batteries! Overcharging
uses up electrolyte. Undercharging reduces range and causes sulphation of the
plates.
6. Advanced Charger offers a
multitude of options for the knowledgeable user. I can charge a powerchair from
a car, a car from my powerchair and in fact any battery size and type so far
invented. And graph capacity and other details on the PC... For GEEKS! I have
one! Actually two... Here
7. Range Extender...
A workable add on lithium battery range extender for the
experimenter. Up to 90 km (55 miles) range.
Here
ALL of these charging methods will work fine
on Gel or AGM wheelchair batteries. But the higher amp / faster charging systems
work hugely better and faster/safer with the AGM Starter/Deep cycle combination
batteries like Optima Yellow Top and Hawker Odyssey batteries.
