Electric wheelchair

Postby MurphyandDaniel » 29 Aug 2023, 11:44

Got a problem with wheelchair.

Got new batteries, changed ball bearings in front wheels.

When driving forwards no problem, chair slows down when I go left or right.

I have checked cables for any damage, checked plugs and can’t work out what the problem might be, would anybody kindly have any ideas I could possibly try? Thank you

All chairs slow down to a degree when you turn.

This can be made worse for all sorts of reasons. So what chair, which batteries? What control system?

Cheap batteries tend to be high impedance. So when you turn that loads up the motors, which pull more current which because of the battery impedance means the voltage drops. Sometimes a lot. Enough to make them feel like they are dead. When under load like turning.

So details!

Handicare Beatle electric wheelchair, MK 40amp batteries (new), DX joystick.

Just taken drive wheel off, the key is missing from the output shaft of the drive unit, would this cause a problem with it missing from drive wheel? I will. I will check the other wheel.

changed ball bearings in front wheels

If you mean the caster bearings, it is possible that you overtightened the bolt, forgot the washer, washers bent, bearing tilted in the bore, solidified lube in the bearings.

Verify that your casters spin freely.

Yes front wheels spin freely. Can’t think what the problem is. Everything else is fine on wheelchair.

It will if it slips...

It NEEDS a key.

And
As mentioned cheap small batteries can do this. It started when you fitted new batteries... Battery impedance is everything. MK AGM are pretty bad but shouldnt cause this. I suspect your missing key or keys mean the wheel slips. Why are these missing? They are essential.
