On other stuff - The MMA, the state M/C Rights group I was a member of had a 'Bikers Behind Bars' program to support bikers that had gotten themselves locked down for whatever reason (often good ones, we had members in the group that we were glad to know weren't getting out any time soon...) the idea was to let those inside know that there was someone in the outside world that still gave a damn about them and also help those that were getting out make the transition back to the outside world... Seemed to work, our 'graduates' ended up back behind bars less often than the average...
One of our members was 'Lefty' who was a nice grandfatherly type who was in because he liked to withdraw money from banks without having deposited it first....
We used to tease him about how things were changed since he went in - like what is an ATM going to do with a stick-up note.... OTOH he liked to grumble about how "modern" car design made things more difficult as you had to waste time opening car doors and getting IN the car before leaving instead of just hopping on the running boards... (As I said, he'd been doing this for a LONG time...)
The 'Ural' (AKA "Ur(in)al") was a 2wd sidecar rig, with a driven sidecar wheel... It was a Russian (USSR) copy of a WWII vintage BMW rig, and was supposedly great off road, and around local areas, but wasn't fast enough to deal with US Highway speeds. It also was a very bad idea to 'fly' the sidecar as the tranny tended to go boom when the sidecar wheel touched down... Supposedly very unreliable as shipped from USSR, but if a buyer stripped it down and replaced all the Soviet bearings w/ better quality ones, it was pretty bullet proof... Upgrading to modern electronic ignition and better carbs was also popular. (There were also several Chinese models that were even more problematic as they were copies of copies of copies, etc...) They also made solo bike versions, and sidecar rigs w/o the driven sidecar wheel...
I have only had one chance to actually ride in a sidecar and it is a very interesting / strange experience, but fun... The sidecar is close enough to you not to be noticeable and your butt is only a few inches off the road, so you feel like you are flying down the road with nothing around you... The closest way I can describe it is that back in the 60's Gulf Oil Co. made a bunch of commercials (I don't know if they played outside the US) based on stop action animation of people driving around in "invisible" cars... They were clever, one even had a 'bus' with a bunch of passengers, including ones standing and hanging from invisible straps.... Going down the road in a sidecar felt like you were one of the people in those commercials....
