I just saw this video, a girl in the side 'box' in the real life (not movie). This is a well-known pass road in Vietnam, it is not easy. I also notice she is blond, obviously a foreign girl. Her courage is admirable. I see that's fun too and worth a try.

yes it can be fun i guess for the person in the side car - instead of sitting behind the driver on the bike - this way you can sit somewhat feeling safer - and not worry just take in the road view from a different angle - nothing wrong with that -

Hardcore Ural owners are a special kind of crazy. But, their 3wd bike/side cars have been pretty much all over.

Cant say I ever saw a 3wd one.

Pauls looked something like this. And wasnt a reproduction. It was an original war time one brought back to life by bodgery. And was MUCH tattier!!! Used daily all his life, never once cleaned, and repaired and bodged to death. Everything rattled and was non standard and fell off. God only knows how many miles it did. Sounded like a rattly bag of bolts. 2 gears I think. And smoked a bit. But it did keep going all his life until the socialist NHS managed to kill him while doing a simple biopsy. He was about 45.

Being a Ural, we obviously refered to it as pauls Urinal.

did sidecars for many years before I got hurt...

As I say all the bad stuff from cars and bikes rolled into one...

Some virtues - there is nothing like a sidecar rig for slick surfaces like snow and ice... I used to blow the doors off of snow plows, and pass guys that had gotten their 4WD vehicles stuck in a ditch... As long as you kept the front wheel pointed in the direction you wanted to go, the rear wheel would end up going the same direction eventually - I could dump the clutch at a stop and see how many gears I could get before the back end hooked up, moving forwards and going lock to lock as the back end fishtailed....

1 wheel drive, and obviously cannot compete with a 4 wheel drive car or truck... Or a motocrosser with decent power to weight and a very off road tyre. Its worse than both.

Side car rigs don't fall over... I also regularly passed 4wd vehicles that had gone 'ditch diving'... (I was always friendly, and would blow horn and  as I rode by on my motorcycle...) I had to avoid surfaces that let me sink in deeper than the sidecar and bike frames - as once the frame touched down you were stuck - but just about any vehicle gets stuck when the frame hits...
One particularly nasty day I had missed the phone call saying they had cancelled work, and rode there. On a Guzzi the speedo and odometer run off the tranny, and I showed almost twice as many miles for that trip as I usually did, as the back end was sliding side to side most of the way...

But if it was really bad a motocrosser or a 4x4 car would have been far better.

I passed at least two stuck 4x4's on the way.... (and I didn't fall over...)
I also felt like often stayed warmer and drier than the car people did - I would look out the window and see that it was cold and nasty out, and put on my cold weather gear... As a result I was warm and dry all the way to my destination... Meanwhile the car people would put on a light jacket, shiver all the way to the car and get wet scraping the snow off, then shiver most of the way to their destination while waiting for the heater to start working.... Then about the time they started to thaw, they'd get where they were going and have to get back out in the cold to go inside... (I get this experience now with my adapted van...)

Buy remote start. Let it run, warm up, melt all snow, and go to work in comfort and safety while you have breakfast.

Got that, I find it burns to much gas...

It was also nice to have all the cargo capacity....

I can get more in my van, or a car... And it stays warm, dry, and I dont need to wrap up like santa clause! Although I have that choice.

As a biker I know how cold you get in winter. No matter what you wear. Its horrible. Its also horrible to have to wear all that stuff at all! I maintain that a sidecar is all the disadvantages of a car and a bike rolled into one terrible compromise! Your mileage may vary. I just dont get it!

I had a full fairing which was a major help. I also used "hippo-hands" which were essentially things that went over the handlebars and you stuck your hands into in order to ride (You did learn the controls well enough not to look I hope... I once was an MSF instructor and if I caught you looking at the the controls in a course, you'd get a pack of range cards off the helmet...) That kept the crap and wind off my hands so all I needed was winter gauntlet gloves... PhaseII Polar mask (stretch fiber w/ a neoprene insert over the face, w/ my prescription aviator goggles and half shell helmet w/ ear flaps, plus insulated waterproof riding suit... I was good for about 2 hours before the cold would get to me...

On other stuff - The MMA, the state M/C Rights group I was a member of had a 'Bikers Behind Bars' program to support bikers that had gotten themselves locked down for whatever reason (often good ones, we had members in the group that we were glad to know weren't getting out any time soon...) the idea was to let those inside know that there was someone in the outside world that still gave a damn about them and also help those that were getting out make the transition back to the outside world... Seemed to work, our 'graduates' ended up back behind bars less often than the average...

One of our members was 'Lefty' who was a nice grandfatherly type who was in because he liked to withdraw money from banks without having deposited it first....
We used to tease him about how things were changed since he went in - like what is an ATM going to do with a stick-up note.... OTOH he liked to grumble about how "modern" car design made things more difficult as you had to waste time opening car doors and getting IN the car before leaving instead of just hopping on the running boards... (As I said, he'd been doing this for a LONG time...)

The 'Ural' (AKA "Ur(in)al") was a 2wd sidecar rig, with a driven sidecar wheel... It was a Russian (USSR) copy of a WWII vintage BMW rig, and was supposedly great off road, and around local areas, but wasn't fast enough to deal with US Highway speeds. It also was a very bad idea to 'fly' the sidecar as the tranny tended to go boom when the sidecar wheel touched down... Supposedly very unreliable as shipped from USSR, but if a buyer stripped it down and replaced all the Soviet bearings w/ better quality ones, it was pretty bullet proof... Upgrading to modern electronic ignition and better carbs was also popular. (There were also several Chinese models that were even more problematic as they were copies of copies of copies, etc...) They also made solo bike versions, and sidecar rigs w/o the driven sidecar wheel...

I have only had one chance to actually ride in a sidecar and it is a very interesting / strange experience, but fun... The sidecar is close enough to you not to be noticeable and your butt is only a few inches off the road, so you feel like you are flying down the road with nothing around you... The closest way I can describe it is that back in the 60's Gulf Oil Co. made a bunch of commercials (I don't know if they played outside the US) based on stop action animation of people driving around in "invisible" cars... They were clever, one even had a 'bus' with a bunch of passengers, including ones standing and hanging from invisible straps.... Going down the road in a sidecar felt like you were one of the people in those commercials....

my buddy came over today and showed me how easy it was to make a video on your iPhone and immediately post it to YouTube. So I think I'm going to get forget the other cameras that require hooking up USB cables and the SD cards and trying to do all of that stuff when the cell phone can do all of it really well and can provide an immediate download.

I am going to request as I did several Pages back that everyone show how they are mounting their cell phones if they're using that to make videos,

For those who use their phones for taking videos, there's this hat.
Image

This would allow your video to follow what you see when turning your head. as the inset photo shows.

That hat was obviously designed by someone who doesn't understand basic engineering and the effects of leverage.
Using your phone will flatten the battery very quickly and also fill the memory within minutes. There's a reason people use cameras
Phones are great for photos though

Mostly. But my camera uses the same memory card as my phone. A micro SD card. I have those in SDXC up to a full terabyte. I use one as a hard disk for extra storage on my laptops permanantly plugged in. Theres one plugged into an adapter in my Nikon D810. Its enough for a LOT ov video!

I have 3 of the 512GB ones too. A DVD is 4GB... A large NON COMPRESSED blue ray movie is approx 12 to 22GB. They an be stored with excellent quality on a 4.7GB DVD disk.

Apple stuff eh?

Reasuringly overpriced junk that ties you to buying everything they insist on. You are welcome to that. Decent phones have a memory card slot inside or out. Even my crappy cheap 29 pound flip phone has a 256GB card shoved in it... Although I needed to change the file system as it was too big for the phone to read. Its all I had on the bench.

If I download you say 10 thousand free MP3 music files or movies, and zip them up. I can do that in a matter of minutes. Send them to you, can you just copy to your phone and play them?

Or does it make you jump through hoops and / or buy them? It locks ou into the $$$ apple ecosystem.

Thats what I mean. So even if free I wouldnt want it. And of course its tiny memory card and short lived battery are not removable either.
