New here with a battery question

Postby J.D.U. » 23 Jul 2018, 22:02

Hello everyone my name is Jim. I was given an older Pride Victory xl4 scooter with really weak 35ah batteries and would like to upgrade them. This model has the 4" X 13" foam filled all terrain tires on it and has 5" ground clearance. The problem is that I'm 6' 3" and weigh 247pounds and even with a full charge the scooter seems way under powered. I would like to upgrade to the 75ah batteries but I'm not sure if they would be too much power for the motor.

Any suggestions?

Sincerely

Jim

AHr is a measure of capacity - how much electricity is stored. It has no effect on how hard the motors are driven. The motors will draw as many amps as they need up to whatever the controller allows. What determines motor speed is Volts, and with normal controllers you're pretty much stuck with 24 Volts from two 12V batteries. If the batteries are too small, or of poor quality, you may find that the chair runs out of oomph, for example, going up a slope. That's because a loaded motor draws more current and when you draw current quickly out of a lead battery it's voltage drops. The best batteries drop much less than do run-of-the-mill batteries because they have a lower internal resistance.

Thank you LROBBINS! So I should purchase high quality sealed gel battery over a cheap sealed acid battery?

Certainly if you want it to last. Preferably MK gel. For normal people. Those and Odyssey AGM are about the only 2 worth fitting.

Don't forget the 74Ah batteries will be bigger than the ones your using. Check the manual to see whats the largest batteries the scooter can take.

Is this your chair? https://www.pridemobility.com/pdf/owner ... xl4_om.pdf

"NF-22 batteries are recommended"

It also only has a 3 Amp onboard charger.

Also cut your calorie intake to under 2000 a day

So MK 22NFs are 55Ah? With a 3A charger? It will get there. But will take a while if really discharged! 20 hours at CC and another 4 to 6 at CV before they are actually full. Why not a 12 or 15A charger?

You always want to fit the largest size possible & the best quality possible because the batteries are stressed less & last better. It would be to your benefit if you could customize slightly & fit even bigger. I have no idea if that's possible. It's worth a look.
