Ditch the ICS and Permobil programming????

Postby Rye » 31 Jul 2018, 21:20

Alright I'm still having trouble getting anything done with the Permobil ICS. I was just trying to upgrade my tilt to the newer version and it worked for 2 seconds and then realized I was doing my own repairs so it disabled the tilt mechanism. The old one still works (it's got a slight bend though) when I plug it back in. While sitting here drowning in my own frustrations I had an epiphany...why can't we just remove all of Permobil's programming and upload Magic Mobility's software (or another company's Rnet software)?? Is the Permobil software locked in the Power Module? Also, why wouldn't it be possible to use PG Drives ISM instead of Permobil's POS ICS?? Just brainstorming...

The Right to Repair is becomming a big issue here in the US and may help us gain access to this programming, but until then maybe we could just delete Permobil's OS and upload MM's OS. Like swapping Windows for Ubuntu.

http://www.cw-industrialgroup.com/Produ ... R-net.aspx

That page shows all the modules PGDT makes for their own R-Net System. I would replace all Permobil's proprietary stuff with generic PGDT modules, that allows full use of the chair's seating system functions without being locked to their complex ICS system, which they cannot figure out how to repair faults. :fencing

It's true they have know idea how the ICS works (unless they are playing dumb). I've been talking with Pmobil Tech and they haven't offered a bit of helpful advice. They couldn't explain what the ICS parameters do or even provide me with literature on the subject. Has anyone else swapped the seating modules on their Pmobil and had success with gaining access? That module is kinda pricey to be hoping it works. banghead

You could do that, but your next problem is that you will need to use the pg inteligent seating module, and then you are basically going to need the custom software, like say the one from sunrise medical, which is customised to suit their specific seating. And I dont suppose thats possible unless PG build a version for you. Not sure how that all works. But somewhere along the line you are going to find a jobsworth that stops you. Or a lot of cost.

IF your seating works the same way as the sunrise customised stuff, you may get away with an inteligent SM from them, and the software we have here.

If the Permobil "Smart" actuators don't have any type of programmed inhibit, then using another company's version would probably work. However, I was able to get my upgraded tilt to work by switching out the whole ICS.

I swapped the one on the left for the one on the right and as far as I can tell the only difference between the two is the addition of a fuse port. The problem I may have now is that the Standard foot and recline actuators may not function with the newer ICS.

There is a programming difference between the two ICS modules. However, I changed all the settings to match and still the older ICS does not recognize the Tilt upgrade. Must be either deep programming or there is more than a fuse of physical difference that I'm not seeing at the moment.

So without WheelchairBuilder I don't have chance in hell of reprogramming these on my own. Need some OpenSource programming.

Once you have a custom version of wheelchair builder programming, you might also need a custom set of programming options adding to the PGDT OEM and software, the USER software, and the power modules firmware too. Or they will not be compatible, and wont appear as programming options on the OBP in the joystick either. I think. It may not even work.

Like I said, no rear drive and the price being much higher, and the fact that you cant program it because of permobils specific modifications are the reasons I wouldnt want to buy permobil. It adds layers of complication that tie you to their incapable techs and prevent you programming or maintaining.

And theres the problem.

Thats why I avoid permobil everything. Bespoke modules, and their software.

Apparently its available. But me, I would go back to the first idea, use generic R-Net modules and a generic R-Net OEM software. And configure your own setup.
