Extreme X8 4X4 Chair help

I have a X8 4X4 chair. One of the back motors has been making a bad grinding noise once in awhile. I looked at it yesterday and I can move the output shaft up and down. Is there supposed to be a bearing holding it centered? How do I go about fixing this or do I need to purchase a new motor? I can't be without my chair very long since I use it on our farm. Any help is appreciated.

Probably a broken axle drive shaft.

Thanks for the info. It isn't broken completely yet but I need to take it apart and figure out what to do with it. The wheelchair repair places around here don't know how to work on anything. All they ever want to do is put a new motor in it. I'm not wanting to do that because of the costs. I'll probably take it to a machine shop and see what they say.

May just be a bearing if you are fortunate. The motors generally wear out together though. As in if one part is worn out, so is the rest... Thats why they sell complete motor/gearbox as a unit. Usually false economy trying to fix.

I'd put my money on this being the problem.

I've had a few X5's/V6's, so same motors as used on your Extreme. Same thing happened to me. There's this occasional clicking/grinding noise at certain times, and over time it became more frequent. And the axle was no longer rigid, and had a bit of "play" in it, causing the wheel to toe in a bit. It eventually failed completely and would no longer turn So that's what you have to look forward to.

I *think* those axles can be replaced but not 100% sure.

That set screw effort wont last a week. Should be a 6mm key in there.

Yes ignore that part. He's "fixing" something on the chair that's not a problem to begin with. But it does show a Magic Mobility gear box taken apart. Which is the reason I linked it.

I started using taperlock fittings becaise even a solid steel 20mm long 6x6mm key wears and frets and gives backlash problems. Sunrise and a few other manufacturers soon moved to tapered fitting hubs with a key added to be sure.

A couple of screws is a joke. They dont stand a chance.
