Wheelchair drive unit cable has been chewed in half.

Postby Mind The Gap » 12 Nov 2018, 10:53

Hi All

Wheelchair drive unit cable has been chewed in half between motor and control module. Stupid dog.
Would I be able to just join back together for now. Have back up chair but this is favourite one.

Cheers Paul

Yes soldering iron, heat shrink and a little care.

May be easier to do it on the bench with motor removed. A pain I know but its likely the best way to do a good job, 120A at times. Heat shrink all wires, and tape over the whole repair. Preferably with a layer or two of stretchy self amalgamating tape as its watertight and permanent.

Agree on solder repair. After repair there are various slip on cable protectors that can be applied.

Must be easy to find treats your dog likes! Bag of washers, few cable of cuts, some marbles...

I mentioned before on here that had a dog that ate the cable from a plugged in and operating car battery charger. It wasn't operating when I found it. As the AC cable was in a lot of bits. Looks like he got a shock, then got angry with it. German shepherds are stupid. But the danger is obvious. Your dog may choose a cable on a table lamp or anything plugged in. It may kill him. So be careful.

Wonder why they like cables? I recently replaced a huge Propane gas bottle, about 6 feet tall. And turned it on. It feeds my gas heater in my room. When I wanted to turn the heat on yesterday, guess what. No gas... Stupid squirrels have eaten lumps out of the orange rubber tube outside. All my £68 of gas is gone :cussing Why? Cant taste good can it?

Dear Daughter's pet rabbit ate lamp cords & other things... we tried to keep all such out of her reach. She ate her roommate's slippers, shoes & computer cord. She had a 2 story bunny condo with enclosure in OUR kitchen for many years. She liked to go under the recliner couch & chewed the rubber buttons off the TV remote. Despite it all, the bunny lived twice it's normal life expectancy.
Around here mice get under car hoods & chew wiring.

I wonder if running your rubber hose through grey conduit, either metal or plastic... would be enough protection. Stainless braid would a nice if you could get it on.

I have some of this.

https://www.hotsauceemporium.co.uk/shop ... s-edition/

And a cloth. And rubber gloves. This stuff it somewhat unbelievable. I tried putting a 1mm square dot onto a burger once. With the pointy end of a toothpick. I was in severe desperate pain for 45 mins, and using milk, and toilet roll in my mouth. Never ever again.

Squirrels dont like it.

I once had a bottle of stuff they called "PureCap" - no flavor just hot, as it was 100% pure capsacin oil - the stuff that makes the fire...

It came in TWO nested child-resistant (adult-proof) containers.... The inner one was an eyedropper cap on the bottle, and I ended up throwing it out when the rubber bulb on the eyedropper melted....

Minor trivia - squirrels don't like hot sauce, but birds can't taste it... As a result you can buy hot-sauce blended bird seed cakes for use in bird feeders, doesn't discourage the birds but the squirrels only raid the feeder ONCE.....

Hi All. Update, tried hard wiring them temporally and got brake and motor codes come on.
Tried with crimp terminals and got the same thing.
Don't want to solder yet because I have to get some in to do it for me, the fumes are deadly for my condition.

You have something wired wrong or not connected or shorted.

Hi All.
Found more breaks between joystick and controller that I had missed the first time I looked.
The cable had fallen back into position behind the arm rest so that when I pulled it to get a better look the whole thing shorted out.
Have tried connecting them back, but system completely dead now.
Are there any test I could try or does anyone know where I can pick up a enAble40 powerchair control system and joystick.
Cheers, Paul

EBay. If lucky.

Sounds like a ebay chair may be cheaper.

Or fit a pilot plus or r-net system. Again dep on whats available at the right price.

Hi BM
Have Pilot plus and Enable 50 controllers and sticks. what one would be easiest to change over and make programmable cable for.

Hi All
How can I tell which brake power cable is which, they all seem to be different colours from one chair to another.

Brake wires are all the same. Theres no need to worry about plus and minus.

Typically you will have 4 wires going to the each motor - two heavy and two light weight... The thick wires are for the motor, the thin ones are for the brakes...

The brake wires don't care about polarity so it doesn't matter how you hook them up... However you DO need to make sure that the controller is set to use the same voltage as the brake coils (set in programming, or do fun wiring tricks to make it match) or you will make more smoke...

The motor wiring is trickier as you need to make it so that the right motor is wired to the right channel on the controller, and that the polarity makes the motors turn in the correct direction... The wiring colors are often NOT helpful in this, and the controller labels might or might not help as the controller just knows 'channel 1 or channel 2' with no idea of left and right or which way is forwards and reverse... (depends on the chair and how the manufacturer wired it...) There are posts in the past that go into the best approach for doing this, but basically it boils down to getting the drive wheels off the ground, and trying different combinations of wires until you find the right one to get the motors to do what the joystick says....
