New batteries on the way

Postby geordie graham » 28 Feb 2019, 16:45

Hi everyone from warm sunny Spain. I have just ordered some 74ah MK Gel`s ( thanks for the link Martin 007) and just double checking that will be going about it the right way when charging up. I will charge each one individually with a 12 charger from around 20 to 24 hours before putting on the chair. If i was to make up some leads so I could charge them both in Parallel was size mm thickness wire would I need. I have read ( but not always fully understood ) a lot of threads on which is the best charger, but for a complete electrical novice could you advise on a good charger. I am not a full time chair user but I definitely need one when out of the house. I currently use a P/N 240700 input AC100-240v 47-63Hz output: DC24V7A which apart from the 24volts 7amps at the end the rest is complete gobbledygook.
Take care everyone

The problem with gel batteries is that they need a specific voltage and a long slow charge. Almost all chargers including the one you mention which presumably is this one https://advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/p ... 240700mob/
charge at 28.8V which is too high, and will stop charging too soon and give you a green light. So over voltage and undercharged...

In fact almost all mobility chargers do that. Why? Because it works for both gel batteries in a fashion, and the more common cheap AGM batteries most use. But it will markedly reduce service life if you care. So how to get a better charger? Thats not easy because almost non tell us exactly what they actually do... Including the spec on the one above.

Before fitting your new batteries connect together with almost any sized cable, in parallel for 24 hours before fitting. Dont just use any old random charger as it will do more harm than good if its the wrong spec. Connecting together and leaving that way for 1 day will be enough. Then install, and charge for 20 hours even after the charger tells you its done.

After wiring in parallel When attaching 12v charger is it best to put + lead on one battery and - lead on the other or both on same battery

Where did you buy the batteries?

What voltage did you have when you bought them?

I got them from Ortopedia Silvio and the batteries that were in had no indication of ah size but were the same physical size so must have been similar ah ( chair is secondhand and previous owner fitted them).
Thanks once again for the links
