Invacare TDX tyre size question

Postby greybeard » 10 Apr 2019, 20:15

Invacare TDX takes a 3.00 x 8 tyre as standard. Mine are solid but I want to go pneumatic and have 4.00 x 8 available. Will I be able to use them on the TDX? Or will they cause problems with the walking arm operation?
TIA

Rims are too narrow. You may get away with 350 x 8.

I'm not too worried about that as I'm currently running 400 x 8s on the puma with the same sized rims as the TDX without any problem. In fact because they balloon a little they give a nice soft ride. My concern with the TDX is about the suspension geometry. I suppose the only way to find out is to try them and see what effect they have.

Take a 1 inch thick book or bit of wood. Park a drivewheel each side on top. Sit in it. Thats how it will be since the sidewalls are 1 inch taller. The tyres will look odd and wear out in the centre leaving much of the tread area unused.

I use 4.0-8 tires with stock width rims and tubes.
there have been no issues.
the only thing that would be better is finding black tires that don't mark the floors and walls in that size.

Hi Cowboy, the tyres on my Puma are grey non-marking. I'll post the make later so you can search for them online.

Sorry Cowboy. I mis-read your post. Thought you were looking for grey tyres.

Yeah. Painting the sidewalls seems like possibly the only realistic option if you really can't stand looking at grey tyres but want their non-marking properties.

Worth noting that the stock Invacare rims will require use of tubes, and the resulting unreliability of tube tires... It might be worth considering the tubeless rims and tires that you can get via Shirley.... They will require making an adapter, but Tubeless is much less likely to get flats...

Also note that the size increase may be more than the nominal tire sizes would suggest - The 350 x 8 tires on the wheels I got from Shirley are just about exactly 3.5" but the nominally 300 x 8 stock grey solids that came on my H-frame project chair were closer to 2.5"
