Quickie Pulse 6 - Tire Replacement

Postby Arima » 14 Feb 2020, 03:05

The original black tires wore out. They are 2.50-8, foam filled. Impossible to find in black for some reason. Thought I read somewhere that 3.00-8 will fit. Finally found a pair in decent shape on ebay.

Now I'm thinking I should just have bought some pneumatic 2.50-8 with tubes. Just can't see how these are going to fit with the foam fill. If the gap between the rim halfs was half of what is shown I'd consider drawing them togther but this is just to much material to compress.

Might be able to remove the foam? Will still need a tube. A tool will slide between the foam and the inside of the sidewall. I just want a freakin black tire please. What would happen if I tear out enough foam to get the rims together and leave maybe half the foam inside the tire?

Foam filled tyres come in different BEAD widths. You cant just squash them together. Your rims are very narrow by the look of things.
You could just fit 300.8 black tyres with tubes. Even then the narrow rim will make then look a bit pulled in in the centre. But will work.

What is the chair?

It is a Quickie Pulse 6 chair MWD. Finding the bead width seems to be a challenge for me when looking at specs online. These are the only rims I have ever had, even bought a spare set. The old tires have a bead of 1.5in I'm curious if some of the other quickie rims will fit these motors. Also wondering how these larger drive tires are going to affect the balance of the midwheel drive. Going to try and make these work since I paid for them so thxs for the confirmation!

1.5 is very narrow. Yes other rims, such as the ones on the chair expresso has are 2.5 wide. And should bolt on.

It is still OK to leave a ¼" gap between rims halves , if your tyres are too thick. Replace your bolts just.

Getting the foam out was more difficult than putting the rim together. I can buy just a valve stem...but using a tube with slime seems to be a popular choice here?

Also picked up some casters to play with. At some point those will need to be replaced. Wonder if it will hold air lol.

Seems like progress.

Most of the time you can't really get a split rim to seal up well enough to go tubeless, with a few exceptions where the rim was designed to be used that way (i.e. the Hegar rims that BM used on some of his chairs) The split wheels the major chair makers use definitely are not reliably sealable (I won't say impossible, but close to it...)

Foam filled or tubes are basically the only options for stock wheels... Adding sealant (preferably the heavier / thicker 'off-road' type) will make a tube slightly less flat prone, but they will still be potentially problematic if you pick up anything but the smallest of puncturing objects.

Struggling to get air into this caster inner tube. The filler valve keeps pushing the stem down and I've already scratched it up pulling and prying. I see valve extensions or a different filler valve as a couple options. Any tips or tricks?

You will need to lever it away from the centre whatever you use. Screwdriver...

look for valve extensions on Ebay - really cheap but don't get them too long or they will catch on the forks

As shown, either a screw-on connection for the compressor (these can be a bit of a pain to unscrew w/o losing the pressure you just put in...) or a valve extension....

Once you get the tube inflated, so the valve sticks out it should be a lot easier to get on it as the pressure will keep it from sucking back in. Either way you only need the extension to add air - so you can take it off for using the chair so you don't need to worry about hanging up on the forks...

The real problem here stems from the fact that many cheap tubes you buy are NOT 90 degree valves. They are around 80... A half hearted attempt to make right angle valves that on a larger wheel still works OK.

Next time you buy tubes be SURE that the valves are true 90 degree ones. And then no problem. You can often tell by the pictures. Or a quick call.

Without a doubt the most frustrating part of learning to work on my chairs is getting the proper parts.
Eventually after enough trial and error I'll sneak up on the good stuff. They need to make those valve stems black please.

Thats the advantage of building and dismantling stuff since being a kid. Experience. It means I avoid problems such as you are having because I already know what to look for. And buy better tubes. And I already do clean off oxides and rough up the brass wih a scotchbright cloth, and spray the proper 90 degree valve stems black wih the caps screwed on halfway with a rattle can before fitting them if I think it will look better. It all comes with time, and as woody says. An expert is someone that has made every mistake. A master is someone that has made the same mistakes, many times over.

The same experience tells me to swap motors every 18 months use, regardless. And never to buy used! And not to waste money on lead. Or cheap parts...

For e.g.
Your tyre.
I would have used a better tube. And I would have coated in talcum powder. And likely added some puncture seal, replaced the valve core. And if you want a black stem, would have sprayed that last. After steel wool or green scotchbright cloth. Then I would have used silicon spray on the wheel rim so the tyre fits easily and comes apart next time. Along with stainless steel bolts, and grease on the bolts/axle/ and swap out for 2RS Stainless bearings. etc.

This way next time will be easy! No rust, no tyres stuck, no seized bolts, and no bearing probs. Details MATTER! From past eperience on cars, bikes, chairs, moweres etc. Do it right, its worth the extra effort.

Black tires again. Getting a better routine for lifting the drive wheel enough to change it. I do wish I had 6mm tap so I could chase the threads. Kind of excited to take it for a spin and compare pneumatic to flat free foam filled. Not sure I want to change all 4 casters out for pneumatic. At least they are black. One thing I will probably ask for recommendations is a new backrest...the one on there now is not for me. And yes I have the center trim cap around here somewhere. Glad to get this out of the center of the living room!
