Is this wheel rim tubeless?

Postby stevelawiw » 14 Sep 2020, 13:57

Hi I've just received two of these rims and on opening I noticed that there is no 'bead' around the inside to hold the tyre in place.
They were sold as tubeless, does the missing bead mean they are not tubeless and I can send them back as not described correctly?

This is a link to the item, it clearly states tubeless in the title

Its meant as a tubeless rim. But doesent have the bump. Some 8 inch rims dont. It should still be OK unless you heavily bump the side. That doesent happen on a scooter. It has an O ring seal between halfs, and a tubeless valve too?

Here's a link for the one piece 8" rim I'm using on Rachi's new chair. It also doesn't have a bump but is drilled for a standard tubeless valve. Oddest thing about buying these was that it was much cheaper to place two orders rather than one order for two - shipping cost for one pack of 2 is much higher than for 2 packs of 1. I haven't subjected it to hard use yet, but I'm pretty sure it will stay sealed even with 5 psi and side forces as it took a tire shops hydraulic machine to get the tires on the rims. The one piece Carlisle tubeless steel rims on her current chair haven't leaked yet after several years' use on all sorts of terrain, and they too don't have a tubeless "bump". https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32963042371.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dEl5lTv

Yes I meant to mention the 'O' ring and tubeless valve, they are both present. These are the second pair of tubeless split rims I've bought, This is one the first pair along with the wheel centre.
And a picture of the wheel complete. I like all the bolts 8-)

The wheel centre is home made and sits inside the two rim halfs making it 15mm wider. It has it's own 'O' ring cut out and works really well. I should have bought two more of these but the rims in the first picture are £50 each and these were £100 and I thought I'd found a bargain banghead

I've complained to the supplier about there being no bead and I'm waiting for a reply.

A 110/80 or 120/70 as on my salsa would suit that wider rim better.

I'll probably keep them.

- Stop it you'll cost me /money.
I was going for the flat sidewall aproach to try and avoid skirting boards, wouldn't yours make it a bit wider?
Duke thanks I'll probably get some of that tyre cement, it can't hurt can it! (until maybe you want the old tyre off!)

Slightly wider, not much. But looks cool, and better shape for a wheelchair. And better a tyre rub than the metal wheel...

Look at the salsa pics, 120/70 and the Storm 4 pics 110/80 both 8 inch rims.

120 is slightly less tall than your 3.50 tyre is, and still slightly taller than stock.
The 110 tyre is the same diameter as the 3.50 one. but a little wider. Both are 80% and 70% profile. And strong construction tubeless. Duro tyre is better - but expensive and hard to get.

Look at the salsa pics, 120/70 and the Storm 4 pics 110/80 both 8 inch rims.

All of the above are 8 inch rims.
With 3.00 x 8 stock, 3.50 x 8, 110/80 - 8, 120/70 - 8.

And all a waste of time... I just noticed your wheels are TEN INCH!!!

Thanks for the explanation of the different profiles tho, you're right it is better to have a bit of tyre proud of the rim, maybe I'll rethink that and get some 110/80s for it

I only have one chair with 10 inch rims.
They do these... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130-60-10-Ti ... SweyZfH3GO

130/60 TEN!

Total chair is 24 inches wide! Pig to fit tyres, hard to get to initially inflate. Obviously tubeless. These are 4J inch x 10 rims. Again monkeybike rims.
