Powered Vehicle Ramps & Tailgates UK Converters?

Postby Scooterman » 27 Jun 2017, 13:05

Hi, I'm looking at vehicle options to transport me, my scooter, and my assistance cat, on fun days out.

Currently I have an estate car with boot hoist, but it can only carry my small scooter. The ideal vehicle would be a van or WAV type vehicle with automatic powered rear access ramp. I've been doing some googling and all the WAV vehicles I've seen have a manually deployed ramp. Well that's no use to me on wet dark winter nights cos I suffer from chronic pain and am so unsteady on my crutches that I'm not up to faffing around with manual ramps.

Ideally I would like a van with an automatic powered rear ramp and tailgate (I don't need rear passenger seats). I thought if I got a van with a high roof then I could ride the scooter up into the back of the van and scrabble round to the driver's seat. The only downside to this is modern vans all seem to have a metal bulkhead between the cab and luggage area. I wonder if the bulkhead can be unbolted and removed?

But I can't seem to find a UK converter who does a powered ramp and tailgate conversion? Anyone know of anywhere?

Many thanks I'll check them out .

Btw was the van you imported from America already converted, or did you get the ramp conversion done in the UK?

All done in the US. Actually Canada. Lowered floor, ramp, lowering suspension etc.

So VAT and import tax free. And tax free... And you don't pay US purchase tax. And they are half price...

Heres another. https://www.carpages.ca/used-cars/ontar ... n-2416385/ brand new. And a rear access one without full floor lowered is cheaper.

A UK non lowered floor one, cheaper... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meXMgi0PVA8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQn3N77yjpw manual ramp...

Thanks for the youtube links, they're just the sort of thing I'm looking for. I'm planning to go to a motability roadshow event in Exeter next month, hopefully there may be some similar conversions on display that I can look at and try out.

Ah! thanks for that. Is UK vat and import tax exempt cos it's classed as disabled equipment? And is that the same for US purchase tax?

Is this the rear access one you mention this? https://www.carpages.ca/used-cars/ontar ... n-2428655/
All the WAVs on this site appeared to be used? Have you any links for US/Canadian dealers selling new WAVs? And do you rate the Dodge Grand Caravan?

Also, is the advantage of a lowered floor that the ramp angle/length isn't as steep/long.

Chryslers have cheap build quality. But they work. I would rather have the VW caravelle but it costs.

The fully lowered floor is to allow a wheelchair user to have headroom in the whole interior of the vehicle so he can drive from a powerchair etc. It costs to rip the floor from a brand new van.

The van I linked to WAS new. And cheap!

Try the rollx site: http://www.rollxvans.com/inventory/?search=new&type=1
All these are side ramp, full lowered floor.

These are many different bigger vans http://www.rollxvans.com/full-sized-vans-overview/

One of these would do nicely! http://www.rollxvans.com/ram-promaster/

Yes I do, and so does my laptop, it expired due to a shagged battery and I've had to wait for it to recharge to some threshold or other before it would reboot :x
I shall check out your previous post and no doubt come back with more questions :D . It's like bbc question time, and do I not hate that programme! Sanctimonious lying b**tard politicians, and Dim-bleby.

The links you provided are certainly nice vans. Is UK motor insurance much more expensive on a left hand drive imported vehicle?

Also does a brand new imported vehicle have to pass some form of UK road worthiness test to ensure it complies with UK roads?

I use fish, and pay 330 per year fully comp, inc protected no claims, agreed value, fancy wheels, etc. So not as far as I know. With some companies maybe.

Special test. Yes. Once. And needs some minor changes to rear lights, and a rear fog light. Easy to do since the Chrysler voyager is the same van in the UK. Its a matter of one added switch and a relay I think. Chrysler dealer. Or auto electrician for an hour.
Best to order with hand controls if you need that.
