Positve Posioning

Postby PositivePositioning » 10 Jul 2012, 11:44

Hi I'm Gill Arnett, Physiotherapist based in Leeds. I do some volunteering with the Leeds SPIDERS wheelchair basketball and rugby teams. As a company Positive Positioning specialises in 24 hour postural care and manual handling. We train and support carers, families and people with disabilities. The aim is to help people be as functional as possible, this includes helping people to be as straight and comfortable as possible in their chairs int he day time and supported in the bed at night where appropriate.
We offer manual handling training for carers and health staff. This is tailored to the needs of the individuals being supported and can include hoisting if required. We also offer train the trainer courses.

Like all physios, they dont claim to know or understand powerchairs, and concentrate on seating and positioning.

This is of course one of the problems. To understand either powerchairs or seating and positioning you need to understand both. To build a decent powerchair you also need to understand the whole thing and build it as a single device to work together.

Not a "base" and a seat... For eg its not possible to design a "base" well if you dont know exactly what will go on top, its exact c og g, its weight, and the users requirements or expectations etc. Because it changes everything.
