Windows 10 upgrade ?? error message ??

Postby flagman1776 » 19 Apr 2020, 15:12

Wife newer laptop's hard drive is making warning noises. So wife wants to bring her old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop back on line. It came with Vista... She tried to upgrade directly to Windows 10 but it wasn't working so she use my Dell Windows 7 Pro discs to install 7. Then she tried again to install 10. It kept rejecting the product keys until she found a key on-line and got Windows 10 to install.
Now, when she starts up, she gets an error message asking her to activate windows and insisting she has a wrong code.

What now?

You should have just formatted it, installed clean 64bit win 10 LTSC with all the garbage and phone home crap gone.

And I have an activator for that, and it will work on the mess you now have too.

It's not my computer so... I can only advise.
I investigated there's 3 G of ram, which can be upgraded to 4. The processor can be upgraded. But the video card is ppart of the motherboard and she wants to do stay-at-home videos so it's uncertain if the upgrades are worth doing. It does ordinary stuff fine as is...

Noises, hard disk. Its 2020! DONT buy or use anything with old mechanical disks today. They are far far too slow. And very unreliable esp in external or laptop use as they dont like being suddenly moved or disconnected...

And anything with 3GB memory is best used for proping a door open. 4 works, just about. Not great. 8 is adequate for internet and stuff. 16 is about as much as any normal user needs on a desktop PC. 32 or 64 GB is only really utilised of very big busy servers etc, unless you are using pro movie editing gear or solid point modeling like 3d autocad etc. Or editing many very large photoshop imagesat once. Even then if it runs out of mem, SSDs swap files are used for overspil and those are still fast.

Did you use the activator?

I bought her the Dell years ago. I don't know when she bought the one with the noisy disc. Not mine. I don't know if she tried your activation link.
I was trying to determine if the older Dell 1525 was worth trying to upgrade at all since the graphics card couldn't be upgraded. But would upgrading the CPU help the graphics any?

I don't do video and my computers are old but working fine. Mine don't even have cameras. Who wants to look at ugly me?

Probably a few percent. If its possible. But you dont need a new cpu, its like putting a bigger engine in your 14 INCH lawnmower. Will it actually cut the grass any better/faster? What you need is a bigger mower. Upgrading old junk is seldom worth the effort.

Heres the problem.
At a time when you can buy a laptop for 200 dollars, or 2000 dollars, 90% of people spend 200... It is barely capable at the time of purchase. Its a basic email and web browsing machine. But video resolution gets higher, operating systems do more background stuff, (unless you shut down most of the crap as I do) and so the computer becomes incapable. And it was slow to begin with.

I buy the 2000 dollar one. Because then a decade later, its as good as the 200 dollar ones, and can still be useful. Dont skimp on specs when buying a desktop or laptop. Dont buy the affordable one. Because right now for e.g. we are seeing tons of 4k stuff even on youtube! Never mind netflix. Screen resolution is increasing. And something that was just OK at running old 480 res vids with no graphics processor 6 years ago is now incapable.

My tiny Go-pro on my quadcopter does 60fps at 1080p and thats 6 years old! The new ones are doing 4k and 8k and that needs 16x the data rate or 16x the graphics power and memory. My tiny 13.3 laptop has a 4K screen, and its CPU has enough processing power to do that 4K graphics easily. But certainly not enough for playing a computer game. I have a water cooled graphics card, on my 4K desktop computer at around £1k alone, to be able to run a 4k flight sim properly as well as a 8 thread water cooled CPU running at 5.2GHZ. Things keep moving on!

Ah well... Many ways. And many options. Describe your computer. Is it a modern machine?

You can do it from inside windows. Make a folder called Windows64. On the root of the C drive preferably. And run setup. Do a clean install.

Or.

Copy the files to a bootable disk. Or make a bootable USB drive and put them there. Make a sergei USB disk, and copy there instead.

Go into the bios, and set the ONE drive you want to boot from. As the boot drisk.
Then set any other disks, such as one used to plug in temporarily to install windows from from as a 2nd storage disk.
Then set USB as bootable.

Boot from the USB and go to the storage drive, or the USB stick if thats where you put the files and click setup/install.

Other than this basic info its impossible to describe every eventuality!

You can also copy the files to a DVD and install from that. If you want to boot from it as well, then you will need to make a bootable DVD, or a bootable USB stick like the sergei one.

Hi BM,

My laptop is 8 years old relic but windows 10 capable with moderate 8 gb ram.

I now have both editions of windows 64 bit. While searching the net, I came across that one has to install windows 7 first, and then 10. I was thinking of just the opposite.I will be using windows 7 sparsly but needed, so I wanted windows 10 as main on C drive of the partition.

Do not install 2 versions of windows. Use virtual machines (e.g the free Virtual Box) instead.

Install win10 on your laptop, then install Virtual Box and setup virtual machines (winxp, win7, win10, linux, android) in it.

You dont have "both" editions. There are literally dozens of editions. Dont use an UPGRADE one. And do use the stripped down stable one I uploaded. The AGE of your laptop changes the way it need be installed. Because of the way disks are read, and some are controlled by the bios. Yours will be easy to do at 8 year old.

Hi,

@snaker I have tried using virtual machine. The problem is the screen area is considerably reduced. The windows 7 I need only for an old cad program(Inventor 10) for personal use. I don't want to install the versions compatible with windows 10 as it needs enormous amount of ram plus non availability. :cussing

@ BM sorry it's not editions but versions.Windows 10 you uploaded :worship and windows 7 prof.64 bit as iso image.Windows 10 professional is running perfectly. When bought, this had windows 7.

Maybe you did not install Guest Additions for the VM. If Guest Additions installed, the VM has the same screen resolution as the host (win10). In the full screen mode, the VM's screen is exactly the host's screen.
