Same picture

Same focal length of 120mm.
Only change is where I focus on.
When you fotog a scene with a smart phone or point and shoot, where does it focus?

I chose three different points. Same exact scene.
1 on the top lip of the drink can
2 on the wheel on the engine.
3 on the raindrops near the top of the solar panel. Note that the spikes are not quite in focus and the trees are blowing around in the wind as well as being out of focus...

Can... Close to me.

Engines flywheel around 6 feet away.

Randrops on solar panel, about 80 to 100 feet away through my dirty window. Al these are the same picture. Only focus point changed. They are reduced in size of course. Theres a 100% crop on this one so you can see the raindrops.

This is the result of using a wide aperture and 120mm lens on a full frame sensor.

Are the 120 mm manually selectable?

It can be a zoom with say 24 to 120 mm focaal lengths as tis is. So yes. I have 14 to 30mm, 100 to 400mm too. And then there are fixed focal length lenses. Called prime lenses. Available in practically any focal length.

It's too complicated for a layman.

No its not.
Learning photography is actually quite easy. I did that when I was 17 with all sorts of old film cameras. I used to develop slide film in my car 10 mins after taking the pics! It doubled up as a dark room. But I had a dark bag that I opened up film and added it to tanks with lids on to do it in a lit envoirment.

But you only learn anything by having the interest to do so. If you are interested in something you will naturaly study it, ask questions (no internet in 1977) and so learning was harder. Books, questions... I used to pick the brains of a pro photographer studio guy near my home. I am sure he loved it!
