Terrible upload. Less bad download.

My mother of all people will soon have a 1000MBs/1000MBs fiber line in her place for the same price I'm paying for this. I'm insanely jealous. Yes I'll be installing a server in her office. My nephews and I will get to play with that. Mom gets a shiny new PC out of the deal and will absolutely not notice how awesome her data line is while burning daylight playing Candy Crush.

Doesn't help much on a good wireless connection! Laptop and VPN. VPN slows ping, speed limited by dual band wireless connection.

Using channel 9 and 13 with every faster box ticked, on a N router and advanced card. Next room. Tried 5ghz, its no faster, but actually much slower in the next room. Doesn't go around corners or through walls as well.

No higher frequencies do not penetrate structures as well.

My router is a Netgear r7000. It's the AC1900 spec. One adjacent room from my router, 5ghz is still faster than N for me, but not nearly is fast as being in the same room as my router. Two adjacent rooms over from my router, just forget about 5ghz completely and stick with 2.4ghz N.

Direct from main PC

Image

From phone on 5GHz to Virgin Superhub (supposedly ac) 2m away line-of-sight!

From phone on 5GHz to hardwired Zyxel NWA1123-ac Access Point 5m, a wall and a floor away

Moral - get a decent access point, don't rely on router/wifi combos
C5/6 A (complete)
Puma 40, 75Ah LiFePO4 (pic is on tour @ Whistler, BC)
Puma 40 backup, 73Ah MK (for now)
Spectra Plus (weedy 40Ah MK)

BT's FTTPoD is available here now, but I bet it'll cost a bomb to have that installed! Although the B4RN community driven network will be coming to East Anglia, will be interested to see if it ever comes to my town. A 1GB connection for £30 a month wouldn't be bad!

Laptop. On my bed... This is 1 room away from the router. The VPN makes the ping slower!

It looks even better when ou see it like this! We broke the internet!

Heres why! Wireless just got fast!!! 1300Mbps

All my whole street use 2.4, and all of them on channel 11

So I choose channel one, And 6 and use a completely empty 5.2Ghz band all to myself... Top 3 AP's here are mine.

Not at all. But this fiber connect should be faster. Time for some troubleshooting. Because, you know, need more speed! :ugeek:

Everyone needs a pipe like this.

Takes some optimization to realize the fiber hookup's full potential. And forget about coming close to that on wifi devices, even when standing right next to the router with an AC wifi standard device. Also, a laptop etc with a mechanical hard drive won't do it.(even if plugged in w/ ethernet) It should in theory but doesn't.

I dont think any reasonably modern half decent laptop or PC has mechanical drives any longer.

Only the very budget end, schoolkids etc. Mechanical drives take so long to boot that you think its broken.
