Ground Station Build

Postby Rye » 24 Sep 2018, 14:55

Guys, I need to build a DIY ground station to control my DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 (with occusync). I'm wanting two larger joysticks like the following video...

...and I want it to connect to my PC for faster video processing and so I can view it on my big screen. I've seen videos of large antennas that track the drone, but wasn't sure if it could be used with a DJI drone. I have almost 2 miles of land I need to monitor (with tree obstruction) so I'm willing to put in tower if need be. I know some of you have drones so if you have any guidance, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

PS- Don't worry about regulations right now. I'm working on getting my commercial pilots license and am just trying to figure out what it will take to get an adequate ground station built.

Plug game controllers analog JS output into a TX in place of or as well as its sticks with 6 pin connector. with its 2.4ghz antenna and preferably a 2 watt booster mounted outside on a roof for a solid 4 to 6 miles range. Then you have control. The image feeds back to a TV card or TV signal dongle via a normal ROOF MOUNTED antenna with another booster. That displays on your PC monitor.

For RC are you using 2.4ghz? If so get an outdoor signal amplifier. I use a 2.5Watt one. Theres lots. This one is 8 watts. https://www.ebay.com/itm/WiFi-Signal-Bo ... 0005.m1851
Your current TX power is 80 to 100mW. Add this and get 8000mW! 100X more power output. Means you get 6 to 8 miles range reliably.
You need similar but mounted HIGH.

For TV signal what frequency? I use 5.8ghz with helical antenna on the quad. Its good for 4 miles on a good day... As long as I use a DUAL auto switching reciever. It has a helical mushroom style antenna and a high gain omnidirectional antenna and switches automatically. You need that on the roof too. And it feeds its TV signal back to the laptop or PC or even your TV.

Here are the specs for my drone:

I believe the remote operates with either 2.4 or 5.8 or dual band. Do you have pics and explanations on your website?

In the hobby world, all the RC equipment is 2.4ghz, frequency hopping and 50 to 200mW output. And you choose what video system you want depending what you need and what is legal in your country. Most common is 5.2ghz.

That makes modification on the hobby stuff easy. DJI ready built stuff messed all that up and started using 5.8 for control, and 2.4 for video. So reversed! That started a mass of confusion. And now they apear to do both... At once? So I am at a loss. No idea what you need.

I use a boosted transmitter at 2.4ghz. Its like a cannon in place of a bow and arrow. It has 32x the power output of a stock hobby controller. Here: http://www.wheelchairdriver.com/12x.htm You can do that to almost every hobby transmitter. But maybe not DJI? Would need to take a good look at one to see how it works.

And for video you need a more powerful 5.8ghz TX on board. I use a 600mW one, bigger ones are available. And a reciever with diversity. I use a auto switching one. with an omnidirectional and a directional antenna. I get clean 4 miles easily. Height of ground antennas is biggest factor. Go roof!

I might add thats on a plane. Quad has too short flight times for long distance stuff and scares me! I use cheap foamy with 5 channel, inc brakes etc. A Radian Pro. 40 to 50 mins.
