Seems top heavy, and very much overpriced, but yes it will.

That extra £25 million they say is needed will just be the start. It's taken too long to not get far and the list of people who would throw money at it must be very short by now.

Does seem rather expensive. I feel sure I could easily beat that with a couple of scrapped jet fighters and some alloy rims that dont throw apart. For under 2 million inc travel.

An old scrapped Phantom F4 with better wheels, and wings trimmed to about 6 feet span, a few 3 axis solid state gyros making sure the flight controls are keeping it straight and no taking off... A RC test run, then sit a human in it. What can go wrong? :cussing

Predictably its so overpriced that its about to be scrapped.
That was just a typical over engineered overpriced job for the boys over the last decade. It could be done for 10x less.

Personally I couldn't see the point of it.

Thrust2 yes! Broke the land speed record.

ThrustSSC yes! Broke sound barrier.

1000mph what's the milestone?

The target could just as easily be 1000kmh?

or Mach 2 even?

I suppose they learnt a lot developing it that can be used in other applications.

They needed you on the team BM.

I've actually seen the ThrustSSC in '96/97 during my college years in Hampshire. Was very interesting!

Standing 1 mile from it as it went by there wasn't much of a pop.
They must have been sending the noise upward with good aerodynamics.
My hero during the event was a chap named Jeremy Davey who ran the internet transmission
from his small shack on the playa. I told his the fast car guys were trying for the speed of sound
but he was running things at the speed of Light.

Seems to have found a buyer quite quickly considering what it is.

My expectation is it will be up for sale again at the end of next year having burnt through a load more money and not yet got to half the target speed.

I think it will do its target. But its a massively heavy, and even more massively overpriced thing. Its costing around 100 x more than similar record breaking cars. Some ex drag racer like sammy miller would take a couple of ex nasa rocket engines, an old funny car dragster and just nailed it for about 10k all in.

That guy took the worlds fastest drag car and just bolted skis on where the wheels used to go, and fired it UP a glacier to become the fastest man on ice too... On a whim. Cos he has large testicles.

Image

250mph in 1.6 seconds. Went much faster later on in the vanishing point. But if it reaches 250mph in 1.6 secs, then thats about 500mph in 3.2, or if you allow for drag maybe 0 secs to 1000mph. Makes that record car look a bit broke.

"SSC - What do you reckon, will it hit 1000mph?"
probably NOT
Maybe 710
Too light, not enough inertia maybe with a cargo plane's RATO - but to set a record they need 2 runs

Fresh coat of paint and it's now branded as Bloodhound LSR http://www.bloodhoundlsr.com/

Hopefully they actually drive it before it runs out of money and is on autotrader again.

Theres a whole bunch of lunatic drag racers at santa pod raceway that would build that in a month for 20k. And be testing it in 2.

The pressure waves from the leading edges turns hard desert sand into loose sandy sand - makes it very difficult to remain Earth-bound. Solid ice is probably more resilient.

I wouldn't like to be travelling on the surface of anything ground-level above the speed of 300 mph - that's what planes are for.

As an ex bike tester, esp modified stuff, drag racer, and general nutter I can assure you that 180mph or a little more is everyday, super stable, easy stuff. Once you are used to it then it is just fun.

300? Its not much more, quite common on the dragstrip.

In a car thats as long and heavy as a oil tanker or train, then I would not expect then 4 or 5 hundred is much of an issue. After that, I am not so sure.

A dual cabbagway, stock litre bikes with an exhaust, playing. This IS copmmon, on windy roiads with traffic, corners, pot holes and cats eyes, police cars every day of the week if you run a litre superbike. These are not even very fast bikes, they top out at about 180mph (300k (speedometer reads 299 max). They have about 160bhp. My own bikes had double this amount of power because of 30lb boost T4 turbo. But FOUR hundred KPH bikes are now available over the counter stock.

Nothing special. 180mph on a dual carriagway. I have done the same and faster on single track roads.

Remember, these are over the counter bikes. On roads with traffic. On streets and with corners. On 2 wheels.

So a long purpose built record breaking race car with 4 wheels, in an open desert in straight lines is WAY safer and easier. So I dont think that 1000mph attempt with roll cage, parachutes, in a straight line with no buildings or ditches, or traffic, is all THAT dangerous.

I had an unfaired, suzuki 1100E with 135bhp plus 100bhp extra on Nitrous back in 88? 235bhp rear wheel.
Heres a freinds account of a trip to spain, with me, on his ANCIENT old 250CC yamaha from 1976, when he took it all apart! Reassembled and rusty 11 years later to go to spain. Drove me mad waiting for him. It only did 90mph. Which I could just about manage in 1st gear with my drag race gearing.

Notice that there was a REAL flood in france. Notice the top of the lampost being the only bit visible! That was the road we needed. And the hotel was literally under water. Along with many houses and fields, totally submerged. Looked like a huge lake. :clap

Dont worry, was funny!

407kph is 254mph incidentally. Without any tuning work, and with a set of standard tyres, on an almost completely standard over the counter bike that you can buy. And it accelerates MUCH harder than any car, including formula 1 etc. And its safe, stable, reliable, everyday transport. If you want to bend a few speed rules a bit.

On a turbo bike, in the late 90s I had the same amount of power befor hitting the Nitrous button. It was both my road bike and my weekend drag race bike. Can you see why I dont think 300mph is aircraft only? Its a bit fast for the public highway. But there are still roads in germany where thats legal.

That 1000 mph rocket assisted, jet powered car is much more than 6 times as long for stability. Has no traffic to contend with. No need for cornering capability. And its got 4 wheels... It doesent have anything to run into even if it goes off track. Its exciting, and fun, but its probably not as dangerous as a lap of the isle of man on a 250mph bike. You are after all also strapped into a safety cage, with parachutes, and no stone walls or corners.

What a fantastic read that was!

I absolutely loved that - it perfectly captured the spirit of youth and was a wonderful recollection of what life is like when you live in freedom. Some people will never get it. I feel so sorry for the children growing up who have been indoctrinated with all the miserable, pessimistic, political correct crap there is nowadays.
Don't suppose you have the full version without the missing text on page 14 or missing pictures, BM?
(BTW Loved the pics of the old Yamaha - what great bikes they were - the Suzuki GT250 and GT380 with illuminated gear indicator - the Hondas 500 and 750 - the Kawasaki Z1 which bike mags nicknamed Thanatos because it could kill you! - happy memories.)

No thats all I have. There was a bit about the east/west german wall and pics I think.
I saved as PDF and some of it went missing... From my mates site donkeys years ago.

Those were the olden days when big bikes had a lot of power (well mine did!) and had crap tyres... And crap brakes.
5 years on and we had fat low profile 190/55 rear tyres, better chassis, better brakes, etc. Water cooling, But no more power.

EDIT
Heres a full copy still online in another place...
http://biketours.freeservers.com/

I resemble this remark too!
I remember waking up in that bar and feeling ill. It wasnt a table it was a grand piano. And yes there were people eating breakfast on it and dropping bits of food on me. Stood up... All the tables were busy.

We were to sail on the new ship, Bretagne on only it's second crossing to Spain. Thirty hours after setting sail, we arrived in the Spanish port of Santander. A little bit worse for wear it has to be said. You see, on John’s advice, he having made the trip before, we only bought tickets for the crossing only, which did not include a cabin. This was a big mistake. Where do you go when you don’t have a cabin? To the bar of course. Thirty hours in the bar! How many people do you know that have spent twenty four hours in a bar? Let alone thirty. When John woke up there were some people eating their breakfast, on the table above him. Well I can tell you it’s not a good thing to do. Lesson learnt; always book a cabin.

Because he is a tart.
