You just download the RAR archive, extract it and then use Rufus to copy the ISO to a 8GB+ USB stick.

Think you have to disable SecureBoot on Dells for it to boot from USB drives. I know on my M6700 I have to do this.

Depending on how your system is configured you may need to enable legacy boot, so it can boot from either system. I just have menu in the bios where I named one Windows and the other Strelec and off we go.

You also want to add the 15gb of drivers to that strelec disk. So you can install any drivers on any machine you may need to repair or see your disks. Thats the SNAPPY DRIVER INSTALLER ORIGIN. That way you can do this to any PC you come across. In PE 32/64 or win 32 and 64 bit... And a software folder with the LTSC version of win 64, and all your favorite software. Mines 180GB... And I keep a backup of my C drive minis documents, on the same memory stick. So I can install it all over again whenever I want to other computers if needed and just go! All pre configured. Needs a 256 or 512 mem stick thats fast and USB3 bootable though. Or a smart card with sustained high speed write/read speed.

i know what version i'm running but what I wanted to do, before totally reinstalling, was to try changing my existing product key, which is Windows10 Home, to Windows10 Pro. That will update certain system files and will get rid of some of the nannying the Home edition does. i can reinstall from my backup but that wont get me further on and the Home v Pro issue was already bugging me. If changing the product key works safely then its worth reinstaling from backup as that will be quicker than installing ltsc and then all my apps. i just need to test on this minimal install first, so i need a valid product key...

You think you can turn home into a more advanced version? Not sure if that works or not. It might. I thought they were different. Home has lots of stuff missing and far less admin options. If its just a serial number then many of the windows activation cracks can do that change as you activate. I think.

Several websites claim it works; Windows will automatically try and repair itself by downloading the missing stuff

hmmm, my AV didnt like that at all...

Of course not. The companies that make anti virus programs, all get $$$ backhanders to be sure the try and stop each crack or anything that gets you free stuff and marks them as a virus. Some are. Most are not. I never tried that one... But it came from a reliable ish source.

I turned off my anti virus yers ago. I run it maybe once a year or if I see anything suspect...

But I disable the store of software or the antivirus programs go mad at all the cracks, bat files, serial generators etc.

Well it worked, sort of. That app wouldn't install any of the keys I had, but another approach did. As soon as the key was installed, Windows Update kicked in and massaged the files so Pro features now work :D

However, that key won't activate. I guessed that might be the case so now I have some decisions to make:
  • Reinstall from image to Home with Apps
  • Fresh install of Home from recovery partition & reinstall Apps
  • Continue with current build, buy a legit Pro key & install Apps
  • Install LTSC and Apps and figure out activation setup

Still haven't figured why it wont boot from USB. I must have missed something.

If you follow the instructions to the letter it boots. And does so on my dell laptop, similar to yours, and my desktop, PROVIDED you set the bios up correctly so that it can boot to UEFI Mode or legacy BIOS mode.

Have a read here:

I did, several times. I used to do this stuff for a living. For some reason BootIce wasn't marking the USB partition Active. And the link to the .efi boot file kept disappearing.

Anyway to cut it short, YouTube video, MS toolkit, sorted. Now boots off USB and there's a batch file to run bitlocker to decrypt C: and install correct network drivers.

Next up, install LTSC.

While making a boot USB drive from this version Windows Defender said it's infected with Trojans. Apparently its a false positive but it does make me feel a little uneasy.

If you are the sort of experienced windows user you would have the antivirus off - or at very least disabled while doing these sorts of operations.

For two reasons. They often prevent access to low level operations and so prevent some things from running or installing correctly. And because any software that is cracked, or that has a crack file, or that is or contains an exe, or other executable that is unknown, will be marked as a virus. In many cases these are marked as viruses when they are not because the companies that make them pay the anti virus companies back handers to do so. And windows own anti virus obviously doesent like you installing or running illegal copies of windows or office etc.

So dont worry. If its a reliable source, then no problem. Its also a tiny risk that you take.

Always mark your desktop, and software store folders as inaccessible to the anti virus programs anyway.
