Voltage USA standard ?

Postby expresso » 04 Feb 2019, 03:00

Would anyone know the USA Voltage standard in home - ?

buying electronics - i can get different voltages - 110V 115V 120V - etc, then 220V which is not standard here -

which would i need to pick ? using an amplifier now that is 110V - seems to work fine - so why are they offering 110V 115V 120V models ?

which would the be USA standard ?

thanks

From Wikipedia:
In the United States and Canada, national standards specify that the nominal voltage at the source should be 120 V and allow a range of 114 V to 126 V (RMS) (−5% to +5%). Historically 110 V, 115 V and 117 V have been used at different times and places in North America.
So, any device rated in the range from 110V to 120V should be OK.

Expresso just to hurt your brain consider this.

Your 120V nominal, is really a sine wave. So goes: +170V and 0V and then -170V, at 60 times per second. Thats because of the 3600rpm of the generator.

Because thats AC, its a negative/positive sine wave. That 120V is just the average plus figure.

So that wall socket is really:

Average 120V AC.
170 real volts peak.
340V peak to peak.

In the UK and most of the world its almost double this. In reality its more than double this. My 230V supply really measures between 245 to 254V AC on average during the day. And 360V peak, 720 peak to peak...

Ok thanks - i always recall hearing 120V here - and my Audio Power Conditioner shows it also - more or less 120 to 124v - sometimes in between number

So any item that is offered - if giving the option to pick a voltage - anything from 110v 115v 120v should be fine.

thanks

In the UK the supply side of the meter has to stay with +/- 2.5V. And distribution side within +/- 6V if I remembered correctly.

No. They recieve an AVERAGED 220.

Thats actually peak voltage of 320V plus. Or 640V peak to peak. Which is why you shouldnt put your tongue on the terminals.

Any. All are good for way more, or less than your official 120.

i wonder why even make so many different voltages to begin with - they should just make a dual voltage with a switch - - most are that way - but at times you run into where you need to pick one -

In the US everything is made for local 120v. Adding extra complexity or a switch adds a dollar...

In the EU, and china that uses or exports worldwide, inc to the US and the 100v japanese market as well as the EU, most things ARE designed for 85 to 90V to 265V to start with. Some like PC power supplies have a nominal 100 to 120V and a 220 to 250V switch. Give or take a few volts. My chargers have no switch, they just work anywhere. Like the chinese power supply from shirley. It just figures it out itself... I have several solar/AC inverters here. They are the same. No need for a switch.

i seen an review for a China amp that failed - turns out the Voltage was really half - and just put a sticker over the voltage in the rear of the unit - sticker was peeled off and you see a different voltage - what ever voltage you have - they have a sticker for it

didnt know where to add this one - so here it is -

about right from when i remember driving -
