Why does my clock lose time?

Postby Scooterman » 22 Apr 2019, 08:43

The lcd odometer i fitted to the scooter has a 24hr clock. But about every 2 weeks it gains about 10 mins and I have to reset it to BST.

Why is this? I thought that when a voltage is applied to a quartz crystal is vibrates at a specific rate. You then use that vibration as a super accurate regulator (pendulum) for the electronics.

A quartz crystal is an accurate and stable oscillator IF it's been cut and calibrated to get that accuracy and if it's held at a controlled temperature, or has a temp sensor and compensation circuitry, to keep to that frequency. The common integrated circuit clocks come in both less accurate/stable (e.g. DS1307) and more accurate/stable (e.g. DS3231) varieties and I'd guess the odometer maker used the former

And earths gravity slows it down. But not much. Slows you down too, and every other clock. So nobody can tell... :fencing
