I started that Andy Weir Martian book but soon gave up as I thought the writing style was very amateurish. But apparently the science is v.good and credible if you're into that sort of thing...

I like historical fiction, victorian fiction, period fiction, and the "golden age of detective" fiction.
What SF books/series would you recommend for a SF newbie?
I don't mind trying new genres, I used to read a lot of fantasy and police procedurals/crime when I was younger. Horror and SF are two genre's I've never really read. Although I have read all the James Herbert books and some Stephen King.
