Question on batteries!

Postby amm » 12 Aug 2017, 18:27

Hi,

I bought some gerbing glove liners and heated socks. I have seen all the information on here about batteries and wondered if you could advise what batteries would be best for these. I was hoping I could stick the batteries under my wheelchair, out the way.

The info on the gloves says:
Source: 12-volts DC
Current: 2.2 amps
Watts: 27 watts

and the socks info:

Source: 12V DC
Current: 1.4A / pair
Watts: 16.8W / pair

Any help would really be appreciated, as it would be nice to go out and for them to last 3 or 4 hours (If this is possible)

Thanks

You could run them via an inverter from eBay directly from your wheelchairs charge connection. It would take 3.6A total, at 12V but under 2A from a 24v supply. So you would take 8Ah ftom your wheelcair in 4 hours. From the approx40 to 50 you have avaiilable.

Or an additional 16Ah 12V battery would be needed. But I suspect the spec is wrong. And it will be less or its thermostatic and so switches on/off. Because it seems like a lot of power.

An additional 14Ah is needed for a lead battery to work. To get 16Ah usable. So a 30Ah lead battery or bigger would be needed.

Or a 20Ah capable lithium. Eg FOUR of these in parallel would run for a littleover 4 hours: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/multistar-h ... -pack.html

I've got a Gerbing heated vest and socks. I wired in a 24 to 12 volt converter like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-DC-Voltage-C ... SwhRxXKLHW
Directly to the battery with an inline fuse and a switch and ran the Gerbing plug under my arm rest. I also use the Gerbing controller otherwise I get too hot. Also, with the controller it does not use nearly as much electricity and I barley notice a range difference with 4 or 5 hours of use.
Works great and no separate battery to buy. It cost me about 20 bucks for the whole affair.

Is it possible to somehow use the xlr chart port on the controller?

On another battery note, I use eneloop AA/AAA's for some photography equipment, and I'm looking for a charger that can handle 8+ or charge 4 quickly.
Would these chargers be ok or would the ruin the batteries:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vapextech-Supe ... charger+aa

and

thanks

The chargers I dont know. We use a somewhat better one, but its overkill for a few AAs.

Charge port can provide up to 12A and at 24V as its connected directly to the battery on the chair. Thats 280 watts. Beyond that youwill damage something.

The Gerbing controller works on 12 volts so it wouldn't work with the XLR port

Hey,

Sorry I haven't had a chance to get back on this thread.

Which spec did you mean, what the gloves/socks require?

I like the idea of 2 or 4 batteries. How would i then connect these to the gloves/socks.
I could just strap the lithiums under my wheelchair so that would work well

Yes. If that is correct you will probably catch fire. Seems about 2x what you would need. May be wrong and not well insulated.

The Spec seems right as a few websites list in, the bigger glove is listed as 12v 2.2A too.
Here: http://www.getgeared.co.uk/gerbing_heat ... 8200103490

and socks: https://www.twowheel.co.uk/gerbing-12v-heated.html

the battery is here: https://www.twowheel.co.uk/gerbing-b12v ... r-kit.html.

I figured a homemade lipo solution would be longer lasting than the battery above

All may be true. Butremember that you dont have the 100mph icy blast as you are not on a motorcycle. So they are going to be over powered unless thermostatic. It may be better to use 6V. Or 7.2v or 8.4v.

I see what you mean. I'm trying to work out the best way to get batteries as it would be a bit annoying to get less than 12v and find out theyre not warm enough!

What 7.2 or 8.4's would be good?

maybe. You need to test.

Put them on, add more volts till its warm. Eiher AA rechargables or bench power supply. Test on 12, test on a 9.6v drill battery etc. Whatever you have.

I can confirm that heated motorcycle gloves work well in temperatures of -8C at around 90mph (no fairing), so should be good in a wheelchair at -24C to -30C.
Higher temperatures will require thermostatic control or a manual switch else it'll be like being in a toaster.

I do have a temperature controller like this: http://www.getgeared.co.uk/gerbing_tc-d ... 8200103490

I will try out some different batteries when my dad is back up.
But given i have a temperature controller, would it just be worth getting 12v and turning it down on the controller or would this be quite ineffecient compared to a lower voltage battery?
