Dell Desktop - New Win 10 install

Postby expresso » 12 Nov 2017, 21:13

I have a new Dell 3650 for my sister - but i am changing out the HD to a SSD and adding another 8 gig - while i am in there and that should work fine for her -

question is - i have to reinstall the OS - i have the thumb drive with Dell's OS ready - would bring it back to factory along with all the junk - for some reason if i had issues doing it that way -

can i use one of my Win 10 disks i have already - would it accept it and be activated if i did it that way - ? then i can download Dell drivers or there software to update there own drivers -

would it work ?

Download the free version of Macrium Reflect. Use It to CLONE one disk to the other.

OR use it to make a full disk backup, and restore that to the new disk.

Or use Sergeys nice boot USB to do it for you and it already includes a copy of Macrium. One that will deploy a backup to DIFFERENT hardware or PC if you wish! I used it yesterday. Super simple. It lets you take a busy working machine, and literally clone it to a new PC in one go.

Dells fix stick is useless. It needs the hidden patrition on the hard disk (that you should delete). I tossed mine day 1.

its not a fix stick - its the whole OS for that system - i am not looking to update her whole system and then make a image etc, - if you think i am not a computer expert and i am not - shes to me what i am to you - so i cant change her mind about somethings - and hate using her keyboard mouse that she dosnt want to update or change - i am not just not comfortable on her setup - i want to make it simple and easy - get it going fresh for her after i add the new SSD -

set it up once - updates - and then make a image - i dont think i want to clone it - the OS was corrupted somehow - what ever was done - shes still on AOL and dosnt get it - so moving on - i did a reset and i belieave that did install it from there own Dell partition - i am not getting rid of that for her - but if i installed it fresh from one of my DVDS - then it would get rid of it ?

if i did that - would the OS be activated if i did install from my disks instead of there own ?

now that i am thinking - if i install a new SSD HD - i would have to install a fresh copy to make it work with the correct SSD settings - or else it will copy over the same settings it had with the Old slow HD ?

i could try to do the updates and make a copy to the external HD i have there - just in case -

Macrium Reflect is the easy way to accomplish what you want, expresso. Give it a shot.

i tried that before and yes it was good - but now i have to buy a cable if i want to do it -

it may be better to do a fresh install and be sure its correct and sets up the SSD drive also - i had a cable which i returned a while back - not even sure which cable to get for that now -

i have a disk i burned with Win 10 from steve a while back - and i have a usb i did from dell that should have the same OS that it came with along with all the dell stuff -

i was going to change the drive and use the Dell usb - boot and install - then it would be a fresh copy same as it arrived - if that didnt work for some reason

i will use Steves disk - she has a wireless keyboard mouse - about 20 years old - dosnt want to change it - hope that works during the boot to F12

i will take another look at that software to clone and see - if i can get the cable here in a few days - Ok maybe i get it - i plan on doing it this thursday - Friday and be done - -

this would work ? i guess i can do it this way - i go do all her updates now - install few programs - make a image and then clone it once i get the SSD -

then install and boot

If you had 2 cables you could just clone one disk to the other on your PC.

i am going to get another cable and just use the software to clone it - i will go today and do all the updates - install a few programs get it ready -
once i get the SSD this week - i clone it - and then install it -

i made a mistake and should have just got her a XPS system loaded and be done with it - but since she dosnt do much on it - i figured it was a waste - so i didnt but i think once i add the SSD to it and another 8 gig - might as well just fill the slots - 16 max anyway -

it would be much much faster - remember this i was a upgrade from her 20 year old Dell she had - this has to be years faster and she was on dial up still

i got her on 100mbs download internet now - she dosnt get it - her keyboard and mouse are not good either - and it affects when clicking on things etc,
dosnt respond well - but she refuses to change them - what can i do - with a new logitech setup - it would be more presice and respond -

Or get one of these... https://www.amazon.com/Alxum-Dual-Bay-E ... 52&sr=1-14

Use it via USB cable and use one of the HDD Backup tools on Sergei's USB bootable WinPE, job done. And if her PC has a Digital License then you can use any Win10 disc/USB to do a clean install and it'll be activated as soon as it connects to the internet.

i got the cable on the way - not going to make a federal case out of this - will clone it with software - and thats it - if it works it works - if not i pop in your disk i have made already in case - i would think all have a digital license now - so wont be a problem and if it is - then have to use there own Dell OS etc,

i did all the updates - but for some reason theres an error box when shutting it down - something about bitdefender etc, - how that happened who knows

i wont be touching it till i get the SSD in there - once thats done - i may just do it over again fresh start - wont be as bad with the SSD -

well of course its going to have it - i did a recovery from the settings menu - its always going to have all the Windows stuff as usual - once thats done - i uninstall a few items i know she wont use - like cloud drop box - McAfee - and what ever i see that i can uninstall for her -

then i add my Windows office - works -

spybot - CCleaner and spyware blaster - i also have Avast that works for me - now means nothing because she wont even use them or know what to do - so every now and then i take a look and run them -

why i get that error box when shutting down - havnt a clue - not going to try to figure it out - all i want to do is get the memory and SSD in there - and maybe i redo it again to get a clean install this time - with the SSD now shouldnt be bad to get it back up to date - then make a back up image - before she starts to use it -

didnt that would work - different hardware - then i have my own stuff there - would have to delete - with my luck it wont work for one reason or another - then its too late to clone anything - would have to use disk or usb - i have those ready

tomorrow i will get my SSD - you are saying to clone my destop system - then install it on her Dell computer ?

Macrium software would do that ?

You make a backup file, and untick your work folders etc, and then you allow the clever PRO version of the software you just used, (already on sergeys USB stick) to DEPLOY TO DIFFERENT HARDWARE, as it can... Its designed to do that!

I just took a copy of my desktop PC, deployed it as is, to an old laptop. Complete. Everything was found, drivers etc, and works out of the box other than the fingerprint reader. That took another 30 secs on dells site.

youtu.be/AWcZqyGblO4

And the USB has the full version of Macrium. Which lets you deploy to different hardware.

And 1001 other toys!

sounds great - but i dont have that SERGI ISO or what ever it is - i am not sure what SERGI IS - is it a Windows ISO ?

believe it or not - sometimes the compilcated way to you - turns out to be the easier way for me to do things - if you can understand that :)

what sounds easy to me is to just connect it and hit clone drive - thats it - its cloned and i replace it - then of course i want to start from scratch and reinstall a new fresh OS from the recovery section - as if its a brand new computer -

then do the updates -etc, when all done - make a clean image with the software and thats it - yes i know its a few steps involved and your way would be the better faster way - thats if your doing - if i am doing it - it will turn out to be the long road - and in the end - i end up doing it my way when it dosnt go as planned anyway -

will check the video and see - SSD arriving tomorrow - looking to do this on thursday - -

where do i get this Sergi software ?

Sergei is a russian guy who builds all these up for free, and has a website. Its not strictly legal of course, as the USB is loaded with all the best programs that cost. But he hosts these files on many places. And links to them from his home page. It helps if you read russian... I dont, but just downloaded the latest one 10 mins ago.

Open it all out into a folder. Then open the folder with the Rufus in it. Thats just a USB maker.

Tell it to make your USB stick bootable, and show it the ISO. If you choose FAT 32, it will work. It will onle take up 2.9gb.
