Hyperion availability

Postby scootntootn » 15 May 2019, 11:54

Looks like the Hyperion charger you recommend is hard to find.

Is this one any good? I found a used one. I would need to rewire the battery connections anyway, so the 12 volts isn’t a problem.

It’s cheap enough (used) even if it only charges 6 litium cells, it’s worth it just to charge my AGMs.

Those are ok if you can get it cheap, but the Hyperions are prone to failure as BM has a few die on him. This is why the Powerlab 8 is the recommended charger to use now.

His website still recommends the Hyperion, so an update may be in order.

Regardless, this one came up, and if it works it doesn’t cost much more than an ebay charger.

I'm still using my Hyperion 1420i to charge my 10ah LiFePO4 for my original TravelScoot because I have the harnesses all made for it. It's fine for a small pack... maybe why mine is still running. The Hyperion 1420i isn't made anymore... discontinued several years ago. The 1420i is the only Hyperion worth bothering with because it will charge 7S but really you'd be better of to go with the current model Powerlabs PL8v2.
I have a new PL8v2 on my bench for when my 1420i croaks.

There are other reasons to get a PL8 now as well.

It would be foolish to expend the effort to make the balance harnesses for an obsolete charger. With the difficulties of making these custom harnesses & figuring out the charger... when she could make them for the PL8 which is a better charger & current make.

I’ve got two AGMs. And the price for that little charger is comparable to a simple ebay charger. If I end up with something better down the line, I will get an additional charger. 6 Ah is better than the Ebay chargers I’ve been looking at.

I have no doubt PL8 is better. But this will do what I need, right?

No idea now. Depends on firmware. Things change over time. It might. The devil is in the details to do it properly, and at the same time anything will 'work'...

Get the cheap ebay one.

Unless charging lithium, its less suitable.
1. we dont know wat its firmware does. Phone books of code. So no idea what it will do, capacity limits, termination current, etc etc.
2. we need a seperate power supply. Which you did not include.
3. its noisy compared to a tiny 3A mobility charger.
4. its no longer made and they fail... I have a pile of dead hyperions.
5. Only the 1420i was using firmware that can properly charge lead, since I worked with the guy that owned hyperion to sort that out for 2 years. No idea how or what the others do.
6. You are only charging some small generic AGM batteries.
7. It can only do 12v lead, so you need to charge in parallel. So your battery capacity is doubled. That means its the same charge rate as a 3A charger... So not more powerful.
8. It cant do lithium down the line either as its limited to 7S which is not enough.

But obviously your choice.

I was able to stop just in time. Thanks.

With buying a 24v Ebay charger the question becomes - should I rewire or take a chance on letting the current through the entire scooter? If so I need to find a jack plug that works.

It doesn’t look like a microphone jack. It’s got more «bands» on it.

I also found this underneath the scooter. I haven’t found anything in the manual or acessories that account for why that’s there.

Closest I’ve found to the plug. Looks like Neutrik stereo jack.

Plug in photo is a STEREO headphone jack, old style 1/4" size, not the usual thing for a charger plug, but will work if wired correctly and charge current isn't to high... Be careful about how you wire it however as it must be the correct polarity to match the scooter... It is not a charger plug style that I would use as the tip and rings are all exposed and if you laid it down on a metal surface there is a risk of shorting... (I want power to be in places that are protected against accidental shocks and shorts...)

As long as the charger is the right voltage there is no harm in having the current potentially flow through the existing wiring - in practice it CAN'T if the scooter is turned off as there will be an open circuit to the controller, and even if on, all it will see is a safe voltage that is essentially the same as the battery voltage...

I hate 'mystery plugs' :cussing Only really sure way to know what it is supposed to do is to trace the wires and see what it goes to on the other end...

It looks heavy enough to be power wiring, and it's a polarized plug but neither tells much as they could be using heavy gauge wire just for strength, and the plug might not actually care about polarity....

The rubber molded cover looks a bit like a manufacturer install, but the lack of cover on the wiring seems a bit more like a DIY thing... What is that diamond shaped piece the wiring looks like it's coming out of? (I also notice a couple wires on the other side of the tube??)

You could try sticking a volt meter in it and see if it has voltage, and if flipping any of your switches makes it turn on and off, but tracing is probably easier - and if it turns out to be something that isn't needed you might want to consider removing it (the less wiring there is, the less places there are for problems....)

As I said it looks like a 1/4" stereo jack - 3 contacts, namely the tip and two rings.... Very much a common connector, although less so these days as most non-pro audio gear now uses the 1/8" size of the same plug...

Either of those should work, or possibly less expensive 'generic' versions....

My old Pride Wrangler uses a 1/4" dummy plug... or any available 1/4" plug... as a key to turn off power to the scooter.
