Joystick mounted switches WTF!

Postby wheelie junkie » 30 May 2019, 16:18

I'm looking at fitting two switches one either side of my chin joystick like the bended tube Twister switch here http://www.mo-vis.com/en/products/mo-vi ... ts/twister only problem being Mo Vis want £100 each for them. Has anyone seen anything like this or know where I could get the parts to build them. £100 seems a lot for a button switch, 100mm of flexible tube and a 3.5 jack plug.

Parts are available seperately on ebay, farnels, RS Components, etc.

That would require me to know what I was searching for down to basic stuff like what voltage? I'll readily admit to not being the world's brightest when it comes to electrics :)

Switches dont care about voltage. At least not at the sort of levels we are talking about.

OK, found this https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/push-but ... s/1612391/ now trying to work out what the tubing type is, it bends and holds the position so not flexible or semi rigid.

Will probably spend more time trying to work this out and still end up costing as much.

Is the tubing going to be bent once then left that way forever or are you expecting to keep changing its shape?

If it's bend once forever then something like car brake pipe may do it.

I'm trying to add a stop/start switch and mode/profile switch either side of my chin joystick. Switches would attach either side of the joystick and be on flexible tubes so they can be bent to end up with the switch at the side of my chin close enough for me to push the button with my chin. One each side. They will be moved to be in the correct position each time I put the chin control harness on. The blue flexible tube is a bit too big and bulky but the principle of bending and holding shape is what I want.

Yes thats them...

Pretty good. Theres one here somewhere. Can be shortened easily. Quite rigid once where you want them.

However:

.0 out of 5 starsNot the same strength as the ones I already have ...

Not the same strength as the ones I already have. Very flexible to the point of too flexible with little support.

Maybe different make.

I've got a similar tube to hold my vent pipe, they are a bit bulky to go onto a chin control. The tube used in the Twister switch is only about 6-8mm diameter and light. I don't understand how it flexes yet holds the shape without trying to return to original position. If I knew the material it would be easier to search for.

It's 6mm tube - which is car brake line size so any garage should be able to cut you a bit to size and bend it.

I don't see anywhere it saying you bend the twister tube yourself. As far as I can tell it is a fixed shape and the position variation depends on how you mount it.

the twister can use the mo-vis q2m system. it is a solid alloy bar in 6 or 8mm diameter than you bend with a copper pipe bender.

they do a semi flexible tube though as do switch it.

The semi flexible tube is what I want, what I don't want is the £100 per switch bill. I just realised that when I fit my idevice I have a 4 second time out from mode to menu so will be reselecting from the menu constantly, a switch means I don't need the auto time out, once in idevice mode it will stay there.

Duck-Duck for "Loc-line' tubing... It is a modular system that consists of a bunch of snap together bits that form a tube that is easily bent to the desired shape but that will then stay where put unless enough force is applied to bend it again.... There are also nozzles and mounting fittings, valves, etc. to make a complete system.

It comes in various sizes - US 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" bores - or metric equivalents.....

The bending resistance is a function of the size and the length of the assembly.... the 3/4" is stiff enough to (barely) hold up a joystick pod, the smaller sizes less so. From the description of the application, I'd be looking at 1/4" as its a fairly short length (I think) and light load...

It's most common use is for cooling jets on mills and other machines. But it is also often used on medical gear for this sort of positioning task, at least one of the US vendors has a catalog of medical / accessibility fittings and assemblies, mostly in the 3/4" size...

The challenge may be to find a switch that works with a 1/4" line and still has a big enough button....

Also note that the bits are relatively hard to snap together or pull apart, I highly recommend getting the special 'plier' tool they make for the task....
