Steering Parts to Grease? (or not?)

Postby Scooterman » 12 Nov 2019, 14:29

Hi, I've got the wheels off at the moment replacing worn out tyres. When using the scooter you can hear squeaks/creaks from the steering parts.

Should I oil/grease the parts indicated?

That was put together by an idiot.
You need to throw away the inner and outer steering rod ends, and replace with sealed greased ones. Arrows 1, 2 and 4. And same opposite side.
https://images.homedepot-static.com/pro ... 4_1000.jpg

Then you need to throw away the wheel bearings, and replace with sealed greased for life ones... Preferably stainless so they dont rust but not essential.

Then you need to grease all the other points where your arrows go unless they are rubber. Like possibly the far right one. If its rubber, clean, and spray silicone to keep it from drying out. Or replace it. If arrow 3 has 2 bearings in it, replace with sealed greased ones!!!

I knew you'd say something like that! :fencing

And I can see why you say that, but it's not worth it. The scooter has had a hard short life many 1000s of miles and everything is getting worn out. So it's not worth throwing good money after bad.

Shall I grease for now as best I can?

When it gets uneconomical to repair I'll take out the lithium, tidy it up, sell it for what I can get and look for a used one with not a lot of wear. I would like one of them Pride Wrangler/Ranger mob scooters but they're too big for where I live.

Or I may just stick with the Salsa, nowadays I'm using the powerchair more and scooter less.

Yes, oil or grease but long term, different bearings and track rod ends need to be fitted. Likely its had horrible stiff/creaky steering since a few months after first seeng rain. Nobody cares once its sold. All extra profit $$$.

Or... Water, grit and dust gets in as you drive. And the grease gets washed away by rain and dries out over time. They just fit anything at all however cheap just to get it out of the door. As long as it works for a year while under warranty they dont care.

I knew you'd say something like that!

Cant help it. I see it and it makes me :eh: banghead

Mob scooters aren't very well made, at least the one's I've own haven't been. A cheap 1" square tube mild steel chassis roughly welded with off-the-shelf standard mob parts bolted to it. And a one piece plastic body to hide it all. And water gets in the holes welding air holes? in the chassis and it rusts from the inside out. hanged

It actually sounds pretty good. Smells nice too.

Its a weird thing. If its on my window cill, men, all imediately go towards it and start looking and fiddling...
Women, never.

If its on my bed, men, same.
Women, however, pick it up, and put it somewhere else. Anywhere. Obviously they see it as uninteresting, and in the way.

If it was a boring bottle of smelly/aftershave or something the men ignore it, the women go to it and open it...

:? So I started running it on 'obsession' after shave. Because I have some. And its mainly alcohol. Smells great!
Runs exactly the same, needs fuel valve slightly richer setting.

I will be putting on Steering Rack Boots filled with grease on my new chair when it comes.
It has a motorised rack and pinion steering. So I need to look after that :)

I can understand that.

Do you have to mix oil in with the fuel to lubricate it?

Its actually the other way around. Its fuel from my leaf blower, with 3% 2 stroke oil. To which I just added about a third after shave...

So its after shave (mostly alchohol) and petrol, and 2 stroke oil.
Just to see...
Smells OK - better than petrol.
Seems to run on anything pretty much.

Going to try lavender oil and and orange oil... Then run it instead of an air freshener! Keep my living room smelling nice.

I suspect that just lke a model airoplane motor, it will run great on methanol/oil but it runs great on cheap petrol so why worry. I did use lighter fuel, but ran out.

I removed the track rods and cleaned up and greased the old rose joints as best I could. But the silver ball end is rusty and pitted. So I ordered 2 x LH M8 female, and 2 x RH M8 female from Aliexpress for £3.60 incl shipping, bargain! :dance

I'll put the old ones back on for now while I await the slow boat :joint

I didn't buy the fandabbydozy ones you linked to cos they're way toooooooooooooo expensive x 4!

Existing wheelbearings are okay

Amazingly. They are not sealed, just sheilded (against splashes). Those cant be, and are not greased when new, Just a trace of anti corrosion oil so they dont rust in storage. They are just open. To dust, water, etc. They are the WRONG type to fit in a place that is not inside a gearbox or engine full of oil.

You need sealed ones. Those are grease packed, and have 2 rubber seals to keep out water and dirt. And to keep in the lubricating grease!

I'd be inclined not to - seems like it would be more likely to trap and retain moisture.... Leaving them bare w/ an occasional shot of lube would probably last longer...

Thanks I’ll probably do that. And replacement ones were very cheap, if one doesn’t mind waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting for a slow boat from china..........

One reason why I tend to order 2X what I actually need when getting replacements on stuff I think may turn out to be a consumable... One set for now, one set for later and then order more before the 2nd set wears out....
