Postby salam321 » 13 Feb 2021, 16:57

Hello,

i need to change my actual tyres to larger ones, i have a storm4, they are grey and a bit slim, can you show what parts i need to change and from where to purchase them, i saw an exemple made before by Burgerman at 2017, and that's my main motive, i was fascinated by it and didn't leave my mind since then.thanks

You mean the black front tyres?
Or the black rear WIDER tires?

The tyres in your link may fit the front. They are a bad tread style for a caster though.

If your chair brushed or brushless? Is it a storm4 or storm 4 explore?

Hi Burgerman,

I mean black front tyres like the ones you have on your black storm, and i also mean black rear WIDER tyres, like the ones you have or even fatter, the tyres i gave on the link were just to give an exemple, not necessarily i would take them, i already posted picture of my wheelchair's motor on another topic and you judged it as a brushed one, anyway, i 'll take new photos and upload them again, i have both models, storm 4 and storm 4 explore, does it make a difference ?
Thanks for replying

Then you really need stock tyre in black for the front. And you need wider wheel rims, and wider tyres and make an adapter to fit the wheels to the chair.

My salsa uses a wider rim. Shown below.
The rear wheel is from china, eBay or monkey bike customising web site.

Heres one on my bench. And with a 120/70 - 8 tyres.

Look at my above post. You need that wheel rim on my bench.

Your stock rim is 1.75 inches wide. x8 inches.
You need a 3.5 inch wide rim, x8 inches. And you need to make an adapter that allows you to fit it. That is wide enough for the 120/70 - 8 tyres.

What I mean is that YOU must make an adapter plate. Drill holes, make a means of fitting a wheel that does not normally fit!

Theres many ways to widen a wheelchair wheel. Or to fit a different wheel that is already wider. And tubeless.

These are adapters that I made in my bedroom. I have a pillar drill. I ordered the meta disks online, laser cut! Then drilled and tapped threads as needed.

Those are totally different.

You might get away with fitting the 120/70-8 tyres, on 3.5 wide rims, as this will typically make your chair 28 inches wide. Thats 3 inches wider than it is now! Its big. But in most houses its just about OK. Search for 120/70 - 8 tyre.

In order to fit the 6 inch wide tyres, you need to make major changes to a powerchair. The motors need to be moved inboard by 3 inches each side. That then keeps the overall width to 25 or 26 inches. If you just add those to a stock wheelchair it will never go through a doorway. It will be six inches wider than a stock chair. Its not practical. Search for 15 x 6.00 - 6 tyre. Or 145/70-6 tyre. You will need a HEGAR split rim, that is 4.5 inches wide and 6 inces in diameter. With tubeless adapter.

If pneumatic is to go, I strongly and only recommend tubeless.

This taobao 3.50-8 tubeless tyre & rim is a perfect fit for Storm 4 , and only @£20 .

Hello,

well 0,5 inch wider is not enough for me, i need more, so i am still looking for both sizes you recommended to me before, , 120/70-8 tyres and 145/70-6 tyres, i think i am gonna use them both for my both chairs, one of them is gonna be specifically for the outdoors, i know that 120mm and 145mm significate the width of the tyre , but what about the other dimensions, 70-8, 70-6, because i find it hard to find them on ebay, please send me few links on ebay so i can at least have an idea

N.B: i need to keep the same height of the chair, so 34 centimeters of the global heigh of the tyre should be enough

The 70 is the percentage of the width that makes the sidewall.
The 8 and the 6 is the RIM diameter.

Absolutely NOT!!!

The 120/70/ZR17 designation is for a 17" rim - these are HIGH SPEED (over 167mph - if you can get your chair going that fast, you will probably get a ticket...) MOTORCYCLE tires...

You want a 120/70-8 size, which is for an 8" rim...

Hello Burgerman, Hello ex-gooserider,

The 120/70/ZR17 designation is for a 17" rim

NOW i know that :D , i took a moment to learn a bit about tires and rims dimensions, of course i wont buy something not 90% sure about, BM have been very helpfull along the way, thanks man.

I am gonna take a little step back to be able to really move forward, i think we all agree that tyres you used on your Salsa R2 were 120/70-8, for this you brought 3,5j*8 rims, the adapters or spacers were home made..fine job by the way..

Something i noticed when i w as reviewing the topic, in your Storm 4, you didn't have to change the rims, and the tyres look thinner than the ones on the Salsa R2 !! (or maybe they're same size 120/70-8), can you please be more specific about thins point

One last remark and request concerning this part, i looked around for black front tyres like you used on your storm 4 (3.00-6), NOTHING, can you lead me to where i can find them..

NOW let's talk bigger, or wider, or fatter,If i would need to use 145/70-6 tyres, in that case i 'll have to bring with them a couple of 4,5j-6 rims

You will need a HEGAR split rim, that is 4.5 inches wide and 6 inces in diameter. With tubeless adapter

Is it nessecary to use split rims ? most of what i found were just one inseparable piece !! HEGAR is a brand name ??

Thank you.

My motors were brushless. They dont use a rim. The motor is the rim. At least one half of it. So in that case I widened the stock rims, with spacers, and then fitted 110/80-8 tyres. With tube. Those need a 3 to 3.5 inch wide rim.

The front tyres are hard to find. You can get them from an invacare dealer at a price. Or use a slightly different size. These should fit, and will be 5mm wider. And an inch and a bit smaller diameter. Thats a good thing as the ones fitted as stock are a little big. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-3-0-Kaa ... SwiItf7yT0

And https://imall.com/product/10x3.0-10-3.0 ... 6934951/en

More. Many are for 6 inch rim. https://imall.com/search/?en-gb-usd=&se ... rt_by=date

One of the things to be careful about when looking at rims, is whether they are designed to be used as tubeless or not... One of the BIG differences is that a tubeless rim will have a small 'safety bump' inside the rim, which is intended to keep a soft tire's bead from pushing away from it's seat on the rim.

A tube type rim won't have this bump and will have a slight taper from the rim flange down to the center. It is hard to tell, but some of the one piece rims in the photos posted earlier LOOK like tube type rims...

If running the tires at close to the sidewall rated pressure, it doesn't make a lot of difference which rim type you use, as the air pressure will keep the bead seated on the flange like it should be, so no real problem. However part of the reason for going to bigger air-filled tires is to allow running them at greatly reduced pressure, which gives a smoother ride. At the lower pressure a side impact (kicking the tire, rubbing against a curb, etc.) can push the tire away from the flange when running a tube rim as tubeless.... This gives an 'instant flat....' (If using a tube, the tube keeps the air in and pushes the tire against the rim flange) On a 'tubeless' rim, the safety bump keeps the bead from pushing away from the flange under anything but really severe strains....

Two major advantages i noticed with this change, faster chair, because of the bigger diameter of those rear wheels, and a more stable chair due to the increase of the chair's width

You dont always have to replace wheels. On this chair I widened the stock rims from 1.75 to 3 inches to fit wider stronger tyres. By adding a spacer in between the two halves.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10467 thread

download/file.php?id=15455&mode=view picture. Rear wheel now 3 parts! Look carefully.

Can you show us which rear tires and wheels you ended up buying and of the adapter you made/ or had made? And of the chair with the new wheels and tires on it?

Thanks
