FAST! Click for BIGGER! BM2 POWERCHAIRINSURANCE FOR YOUR DISABLED ADAPTED CAR OR VAN CAN BE DIFFICULT!

If you have a modified vehicle it can be hard to insure.

Be it a complex and expensive modification, like my own van shown below, (with lowered floor, ramp, imported from the US, left hand drive, different wheels) or just a simple UK car adapted in some minor way, insurance can become both difficult to obtain or very expensive.

FORTUNATELY there are some insurance companies that specialise in modified vehicles and also in disabled adapted conversions, imported vehicles and other hard to insure vehicles.

I personally found the best price in my own case was through Adrian Flux, although I since had a better price from Fish Insurance, who specialise in disabled insurance of all kinds.

They also do specialist insurance for scooters and wheelchairs amongst other things.

Modified vehicles are becoming more common on our roads whether its a tuned or customised non disabled car or a specialist adapted disabled conversion. In all cases the best, cheapest, fastest option is an insurance comparison website.

BUT THERE'S A PROBLEM

At times with certain vehicles or modifications the available options and choices don't fit the online forms. What I do here is to fill them in as near as possible. For e.g. my vehicle is a Dodge Caravan SXT but because its American its not on the UK insurance comparison websites lists of vehicles.  No worries, its basically the same as the UK Chrysler Voyager so I choose that. Same with engine sizes. I choose 3.3 litres for eg as the 3.8 litre engine as fitted to the US vehicles is missing.  If your specific modification's) isn't on the lists then be creative and choose something else as close as possible.

If you need to, just fill in the forms incorrectly, then when you get your prices CALL UP the companies and explain the differences between your quote and the actual vehicle and they will update the prices as and if needed on the telephone as required and adjust the cover cost accordingly.  Its well worth the effort as searching many companies at once is much faster and more thorough than calling tens of individual insurance companies or local brokers individually.

  • USAA *IF* one can get in to it (requires some sort of US Military connection)  - I've heard a lot of very good comments on them from everyone I know who can get it.

  • AMICA Insurance. Again they seem to have a relatively good reputation for decent rates and good service...
