My Powerchair Wont Charge?

I get emails weekly saying that "My Power Wheelchair or Scooter will not charge!"

Since this seems to be a common "problem" I thought I would explain what the problem is.

PowerChair Menu
More Charging Methods

The Problem:

You go to your powerchair or scooter and plug in the charger and the error light comes on. Or the charger doesn't start and does nothing.

There can be several reasons for this. I will start with the most common.

a) Your batteries are too flat.

This may be because you didn't use the chair for some time.  And assumed that it would be fine. Its not!  The batteries in your powerchair naturally discharge over time. Some faster than others.

If you don't use it then charge it at least every 2 weeks overnight without fail. Or battery damage may result.

And even when switched off, your powerchair itself also still takes a small amount of power from the batteries.  Or maybe you left it switched on by mistake for a day or so after you last used it.  Clue? Powerchair may not turn on...

The odd thing is, many powerchair chargers will not charge a very depleted battery. If your battery voltage falls below a pre set limit then the charger just refuses to play the game.

The solution in this is the case is simply to connect your Wheelchairs batteries individually (one at a time!) to your cars battery with jumper cables and start the engine running for around 20 minutes or so.

Or connect directly to an old style transformer battery charger for the same length of time.

Either of these methods will both start your batteries charging again no matter how flat it is and soon bring the voltage up high enough so that your wheelchairs charger can then be used normally afterwards to fully charge them.

If your batteries have been flat for some time there is a possibility that they are ruined and will never take a charge again. And in every case some damage will be done to their capacity (range).  This is permanent.

b) A fuse may have gone.

This may be on the wall plug, the chargers inlet, or the chargers outlet. Look carefully at your charger. And replace like with like! No don't use silver paper! (Well I have done but you shouldn't!)

c) The connector (Neutrix).

As used on most powerchairs are frankly rubbish! They work ok when new but soon get loose and make bad connections...

They then cause charging problems. Wiggle it and see if your charger then works. If it does buy a new plug from radio shack / Maplin's or a music shop etc and then find someone with a soldering iron to replace it!

Or fit one of these connectors instead - needs some basic skills...
