I charge 8 to 12A via XLR and 40A or more via anderson on a 70Ah battery, so its not. Ideally it should "stick" at whatever you choose.

But if it was default 0.2 fixed it would be better.
But I dare not change it in case a furio thing happens!

Hi,

The charger auto calibrated as shirley_hkg adivsed and now perfect. I used it to charge a battery through hyperion( as I was a little worried to use my new PL8) but the current was about 3 amps as the battery was already charged. One thing I noticed, the menu#2 has to be kept at 60V.

I have dismantled the charger to put in the fancy dress. Now the LED indicators become obsolete.

They all do 12A. Every control system, and all XLR type 3 pin connectors. 12A RMS rating on the Neutrix plugs and sockets (XLR).

It will be fine. I charge at 40A as a matter of course daily. More from my van. And I would charge at a higher rate if I could.
The reason to charge at 12A is because the bulk stage ends faster. Leaving more time to allow the CV stage to properly charge the battery in the limited time available. So 12A = better.

On a chair with such small batteries the wiring from the jack to batteries may be marginal for 12A even if the connector could handle it.

Its unlikely though. The controller manufacturer would not know what sized battery would be used on different models of chair. There will be stock wiring in the control system, from XLR to to power module as on every chair. And battery cables are the ones connected to the controller/battery. So it should be the same as every chair as far as we could know.

Out of interest, what controller is it? I can try look it up. All the ones like old pilot or old dynamic systems state 12A max, as do all the modern ones like pilot plus, r-net, vr2, etc. So it will say somewhere.

The reason 8 Amps was choosen traditionally as max is because an old style transformer chargers and taper type chargers used years ago, can often supply more than 8A and go up to 11 or 12 when the battery is very low for a few mins. They are just transformer/rectifier setups, so depend on resistance to limit current. Some later ones got more clever and had voltage regulation... But no current limiting other than transformer matching. So the bigger the voltage difference the greater the amps. So an old 8A charger can start at 12A with a very discharged battery, then fall to 8A when it reaches say 24V as it charges to a normal charge level. So theres some safety in the system.

Your comments reassure me. Add to that the fact that unless the batteries have very low internal resistance and are deeply discharged, they won't sit at 12 Amps for very long. As long as the contacts are clean and the wiring is properly done. When Rachi's chair arrived from the factory the XLR jack (as well as other wiring) had cold solder joints and it got hot to the touch even at 6 Amps.

Many of mine get hot to the touch. Even the control pod to power module cables get quite warm. Seems normal. They get hot at 8A too. All this warm wires and connectors means that the charger voltage and the battery voltage is quite different. So 12A part ends fast anyway as soon as the charger sees 28.2V, but the battery may be .4V or so less at 12A. Another great reason to use Andersons, thicker shorter cables. More CC time, short CV = Much quicker more complete charge overnight.
