i may be able to try adding the spacer in the rim - from another set of rims if i can get my hands on them

and if it only needs longer bolts - screws - i may be able to get that done before winter time - and have new tires ready to change out for next summer -

with a 110/70 you said ? or 110/80 - on the wider rims with the spacer ?

Yes... Or even your 350 tyre. Those work and look much better on a 3 inch to 350 rim.

so what do i need

just another rim half - and longer bolts ?

but the tube valve - would need to be longer also ?

add an extender there

tell me again step by step whats needed and how its done -

how wider would it be ?

i could ask a mechinic if they would be willing to tackle it for me - or else i have to leave the bump in place - if it does no harm - its ok also

You may nit be able on your particular rims. You need to take a wheel off, take it apart and measure a few things first. Then we can see. You will need to remove that lip though. Becomes too hard to fit tyres and assemble othewise.

The width of a tyre depends 90% on the RIM WIDTH not on the numbers moulded into the side.

So adding wider tyres to the same rim achieves little in width, as it just makes tham narrower and taller and distorted in shape.

The SHINY rims on my Salsa are 3.5 inches wide. See below. BETWEEN the rims edges.

If I put a 3.50 x 8 tyre on tthat the tyre would be over 4 inches wide. Like the dhirley photo I linked to earlier. If I put a 110 tyre on is would be 115 wide. If I put a 120 tyres on it would BE 120 because thats the right rim width. It would be 130 wide on a 4 inch wide rim. Its 110 wide on my Q700 as its on a widened 3 inch rim...

Does that help?

ALL of these tyres will fit a 3.5 inch wide rim.

Yes 3. It was 1.75. Why? Because the rim doesent split in the centre. And the part I added INCLUDED the outer rims lip that I had removed. I really wanted another half inch width.

your rim stock was 1.75 wide - not a two part rim ?

how did you remove the outer lip on that - in my case - i will use a tube - so needs to be smooth

did you smooth it down - how - if its too much to do - no one will want to do it for me

This rim is 3.5 wide. Look how wide that looks! Your 3.50 x 8 tyre will fit, be 4.2 approx wide, and look great! It will also be slightly less tall than on a narrow rim.

yes very nice - BUT i dont have that rim - i cant make a spacer or adapter if i did have that rim

i dont want it to be wider than it is now - its already wide enough - 27 inches or 27.5 inches -

i dont want it to be so wide looks funny and dosnt fit anywhere you go

i dont have someone here that can do the work involved to make that rim work

working with my stock rim is the best i can do - and i have to have a bike shop install the tires - even with a stock rim -

our rim stock was 1.75 wide - not a two part rim ?

Yes it was like yours. And yours too will be 1.75 wide. Or the grey solid tyre wont fit...

And yes 2 parts.

how did you remove the outer lip on that - in my case - i will use a tube - so needs to be smooth

I know this is going to be a very very long thread.
I UNBOLTED the front. Leaving the rest of the rim on the chair.
I added the SPACER and then refitted the original outer rim part. Longer bolts.

The spacer was from a DIFFERENT TYPE OF WHEEL. One that had the removable part at the rear close to the chair.

did you smooth it down - how - if its too much to do - no one will want to do it for me

Define smooth it down. I CUT OFF the wheel lip. The part that would have held the tyre on... Yes. Easy actually. And smoothed it with a drill and a sanding disk. And sprayed it black.

Re: Tires

ok - dosnt sound like i be able to get that done

the spacer you added is not half of another rim ?

i though you said once - another set of rims - take off of that - the back half - use that half as the spacer - the lip of the spacer part - needs to be cut down sanded smooth - -

then just bolt them all together - with longer bolts -

i recall you said - leaving the lip was OK - - cutting it off smoothing is perfect - but the less work involved the better the chances someone will do it for me -

you dont think another set of same rims i have here - use the back half as the spacer - this way the holes all line up - easier ?

Ok - so first step for me is

remove grey tire and look at the rim i have - will take pic and post it for you to see and tell me if it can be done

if it can be done - i would still need another set of rims first -

i will ask my mechanic if hes willing to do it - he will say he have to see first and have me drop it off to him to check whats involved if he says ok

i will then give it to my father to drop off to him - the easier it is to do - the better the chances he will do it - and i can finally try wider rims

i find this to be the easiest way for me - i give it a try - like the BT - what can happen - either it works out or it dosnt and go back to stock rims -

BT - either i make it work inside or i brick it - and call it a night - - you only fail if you never try -

but i dont want them to stick out too far - ;)

It will add an inch each side to the wheel. That may not add an inch to the chair depending on which tyre you fit.

I took a JIVE wheel apart and used the REAR part next to the chair/motor. Thats the side that unbolts.

I cut off with a jigsaw the lip that holds the tyre on... Thats the silver ring.
Then I smoothed it off with a sanding disk in a drill... And sprayed it black. Thats the black ring...

Re: Tires

that would make my chair 29.5 - too wide

ok lets say the rim is an Inch wider

what tire would i use to keep it at 27.5 total as it is now

any wider will look stupid from the rear - too wide -

the more i think about this - i think i can pull it off - if i get another set of rims - and just have to cut the lip sand it smooth etc,

i think my guy would be able to do it - i know he can - its if he wants - but he may - for someone like him and having all the tools - and i wont rush him -

maybe if i have tires - he even may have them mounted- who knows - i dont care - as long as he can do the rim part - i have the bike shop do the rest -

so which tire would work and not make it wider than it is now ?

Then I drilled out the M6 threads with a 6.2mm drill.

Then I fitted this IN BETWEEN the two halves of the Q700R rim and used longer bolts. And fitted a 120/70-8 tyre.

See the 3 rim parts. The one that has a better black finish is the extra part. It makes the wheel rim 3 inches wide. Then even your 3.50 tyre would fit better! This one is too wide, it really needs a 3.5 wide rim. I should have fitted a 110/80-8 tyre. But didnt have one to hand.

I will take it apart and spray the whole thing black properly, and fit 110/80 tyre eventually.

in my case -

why would i need to drill out any thing - just a longer bolt ? if using the same rims for the spacer - to keep the holes all aligned and already made to take a bolt

Yes. But your rim outer ring may not be 1 inch. So you will need to measure and see how long they want to be.

In most of the world these are M6 bolts.

Bm what is the material of the rims - the lip that needs to be cut and sanded

my guy asked me what material it was - i have to show him some pictures also -

would you have a picture of the split rim with the lip - so i can show him what he needs to do -

he do it if he can - but needs to see what it is first

thanks

Same as all wheelcair alloys. Its some alloy of aluminium that is hard and quite brittle. Its cast.

i think this may not work on my rims- i didnt think about this before but what about the studs on the Hub ? if i added a spacer - they may be too short - cant mount the tire ?

because my rims the outer part of the rim needs to be screwed down - on your rims - its different - it dosnt affect the bolts from the hub - you just needed longer screws around the rim edges

look at my rims

may not work
