PL8 preset adjustments 'Charge Timeout'

Postby foghornleghorn » 19 Jun 2021, 11:58

Is there any way to increase the maximum allowed charging time in the preset above 16 hours?

I'm charging at 10 amps. Pack is about 170Ah.

Within the preset tabs there is Safety > Charge Timeout > multiples of 2 hours up to 16.

Is 16 the absolute limit, or is there a way to go above that? Discharge timeout offers up to 4 days before it will stop.

No. 16 hours charge total time is the limit. If you re taking longer than that then you are charging at much too low rate. 30A or more is nearer the mark on 170Ah lithium.

Think about a lead battery. You charge those too slowly with a mobility charger at 8A. MK suggest best charge rate is around 1/3rd C. So 24A. Thats a 70Ah battery. LiFePO4 want charging about the same rate. So a 1/4 to 1/3rd the capacity. On a 175Ah lithium thats 43A to 58A...

I usually use full power so 40A on anthing bigger than 120Ah. If you worry about cables or power supplies, drop it to 30 to 35A.

Remember that the lithium can usually be charged at .5 to 1C or in your case a lot more than is practical!

I charge my 176 Ah pack at 25 amps.

The main reason that I charge at such a "low" rate is that my charger (power supply) is plugged into a 15 amp, 120 volt circuit (I am in the US) in the garage that is very heavily loaded. Otherwise, I would be charging at a higher rate.

I rarely drain more than 120 amp hours from the pack between charges, so the pack in easily charged overnight.

Wall 16A X 120v = 1920 watts max.
Chair 28.8V x 40A = 1152 watts. out. Add 20% to that due to power supplt/charger losses. Is 1382 watts needed from the wall?

Does other stuff plugged into the garage have to be deducted from this?

Yes if you are happy to add 120Ah back overnight then 25A is enough.

I charge my 4400mAh (4.4Ah) quadcopter and heli batts at 40A... Thats a 8C rate. This is why hobby chargers are so powerful. We charge in 8 to 10 mins wen needed at the field within the battery specs.
