12V pack with BMS ?

Postby expresso » 15 Dec 2021, 00:01

Just thinking over a bit -

If i wanted to keep a 12V lithium pack at home flat on a dolly for emergency lighting etc, to replace the lead i have sitting - wouldnt it be wise to use a BMS with that pack ? i mean how would i know when to stop using it when its in use - it wont cut off on its own

if a BMS is not useful for this purpose - what would you use instead ?

this is not going in a wheelchair to use daily etc, - just to sit there in case i need it - lets say i needed to use it - i connect my inverter and plug in my lamps etc, for light - or power my bed or toilet aid etc, - beside just checking manually with volt meter - if it was in use steady - how to protect it from over discharging unless using a BMS

in this application - wouldnt a BMS be fine ?

A bms would work. If charged frequently. So would a cell log or a voltmeter.

yes but you would have to pay attention and check it often -

i guess a cell monitor and keep an eye on it while in use - - just add an extra set of balance leads to the cell connector and thats it ?

or not even - can use one set and plug it in cell monitor - then unplug to charge ?

Many cell monitors have alarms that can be set to go off when you hit a specified voltage... You probably don't want to leave one plugged in all the time when it isn't in use since many just pull from one cell and will unbalance the pack, but this would be less of a concern when the pack is actually being used...

I would just make a plug for the monitor that will connect to the same port you use for balancing while charging.
