Lithium Fires - how to put them out ?

Postby expresso » 24 Apr 2022, 22:52

all i been reading here on the news lately and 4 fires over the weekend here

all caused by those scooter bikes electric lithium ion - etc,

i know its not the LIFEPO4 we use - but

it got me thinking now -

How do you put out a fire if it should start with our chairs - our LIFE batteries etc, ?

whats the best way to handle that situation if it should occur -

Well if it's fused correctly and the wire sizes are not undersized, you won't have a fire! But you can keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case the BMS catches fire.

Its very very hard to get any LiFePO4 cell to actually burn because they dont. You would need an additional external heat source like a house on fire to do that. Why? Because the thing that burns in a LiFePO4 is the oily electrolyte. There isnt a lot of it, and it needs air. And to get it out you need to get the cell hot enough to make it boil and escape the cell. The electrical power alone isnt enough.

So a house fire, a fire of the rest of the chair started by the wiring/BMS failing might get it hot enough to do that. And has destroyed cars for e.g in the past. But its not likely. It may release a lot of white smoke/steam/vapour if shorted out with a very heavy cable. If the surroundings are hot enough like in a house fire that vapour can burn though. Its basically similar to cooking oil. And about as dangerous.

I would be more concerned with lead. It gives off hydrogen and oxygen and those batteries if overcharged badly or shorted seriously can actually explode throwing hot acid everywhere...

Put it out? Lithium ion cant be put out. Lipo cant be put out. LiFePO4 can in the same way you would put out a frying pan of oil. CO2 or in the case of a pan a towel to cut off the oxygen. I do have a C02 extinguisher in my room. But that wasnt why. I did use it to put out my foot!

Those are the cells I call fireworks. They are dangerous in more than a couple of Ah. They set off each other. These are usually caused by a charger with too high voltage (an extra 0.1V is enough). Or by the typical bms...

I think its a good idea for anyone disabled to have 2 or 3 up to date fire extinguishers an a smoke detector in each room regardless of what your charging. An have a plan just incase.

I think there are things in our houses that are alot more of a fire risk than lifepo4 that we look over
For example I have squirrels getting in my attic probably chewing wires. This is a big fire risk. Getting it fixed this week

THESE are the best handy size. I have one in my kitchen, in polished alloy like this hooked on the wall, and a red one same size in my room.

I also had squirrels in my roofspace. They ran back and forth all day, even at night. Sounded like a heard of cattle. Till I bunged up the hole they used with steel mesh.

wrong type you want c02.

C02 is the only way to deal with most kitchen fires, primarily oil. Same as lithium ion phosphate is oil. It removes the oxygen needed for almost everything to burn. So gives a cloud of co2 which means no oxygen, fire goes out. And leaves no mess.

The one you linked to is a dry powder. Works on wood, paper etc. Dont fire that at a frying pan fire...

it does say ABC - which cover oil electrical fires etc, - thats what i read up on

i will search for CO2 - dry chemical is the one that would work then ?

anything is better than nothing i guess -

ABC-rated to fight recreational fires associated with trash, wood, paper (Class A fire), liquid & gases (Class B fire), or electric fires (Class C).

Where I live in the US it's a fire station. I'm aware that some people say firehouse, but I've never heard that in real life. I think they say firehouse because they kind of look like houses and the firemen work 24 hour shifts, so they "live" there.

After I'd replaced the battery in my old iPhone, I thought I'd puncture the old one, you know, just for fun! czy

I jabbed at it with a screw driver. It took a few puncture holes to go. But then it flare up just like a Roman candle firework. Definitely burns rather than explodes. But the yellow acrid smoke it gives off, yeesh! :ambulance

And it was tiny battery only, 1624 mAh.

what is a good brand of smoke detectors?
we are going to fit our house with smoke detectors not because of having a lifepo4 pack but because its a good idea for anyone disabled to have smoke detectors an for peace of mind. To be honest i would be more concerned with the charger or psu catching fire than the lifepo4 pack but im not concerned about either of them catching fire but i like the peace of mind of having a smoke detectors an the correct type of extinguisher
