hi all some of you may remember i foolishly bought a meyra powerchair for my tina which she hated and was slow clunky and unable to get up the ramp into the car under its own steam without hanging up and getting stuck! had useless suspension and masses of useless steel everywhere,a seat that weighs as much as the lead bricks! stupid swing away joystick scaffold type nonsense and even the headrest weighs a ton,all gone in the bin and replaced with more modern materials and all painted black as any good chair should be imo,also replacing bearings etc with stainless and adding pneumatic tyres to front and bigger fatter wheels to rear but chair still sensible 26 inch footprint,o and the crap curb lifter in bib along with the huge sticky out footrests,heres first few pics cant see much as i painted and covered frame to save damage during building as only having one good working hand in a mite clumsy! but theres pics of the new front wheels and tyres (mountain board wheels and tyre) and some of the new 2nd hand motors from puma 40 £160 pair as im on very small budget!pics thanks for looking,peace

not the cameras fault its a right posh one with loads of buttons and multitudes of menus,its the user who doesnt understand the majority of settings and sets it to simple mode! anyhow i did press a few buttons and changed the exposure level down so maybe these be better?
well i been working on and of on the turd and so far had the motors in 2 different layouts problem being the new motor bodies being longer and slightly fatter than the 2 pole weedy 4mph motors it had originaly,the first set up made the arse to wide and i had a rethink reorientation and moved the shocks to a better location.
as in the process of stripping the chassis down i found the main swinging arm mounting bolts seized solid to the phos/bronze bush due to zero lubrication and water ingress rusty nasty things but explains why the shocks did nothing at all also the angle of them being so sloped was all wrong so moved them and recut the cover to fit around them so now have what should be 25.5 inch footprint in theory but until i get wheels to fit its a guess at best.
the only thing i do not like is quite how much the motors stick out the rear but they should be high enough to avoid kerbs etc with the right wheels,
baring in mind this is done with one good hand and a shoestring budget with very basic tool kit and this is just as much a therapy for me as it slows my arthritis and stops me going mad with boredom as my tinas condition gets worse and even short cat trips are now to much this chair is for a spare and for her to have fun with the dogs in the woods and park and was such a piece of crap meyra chair she hated before,i hope not once im finished!

hi all well im looking for something to make hubs out of and came across these but 5 mm to big,my shaft/keyway are 20mm anyone any ideas if and where one might find similar readymade it would make the build easier esp if i can find a supplier with wheels as well,any clues ?thanks

20mm bore, 25mm external steel sleeve withe a 6mm cut out for the key would fit. And a hacksaw cut the rest if its length. And still clamp tight.

thanks i shall have a look,well so far i have made new brackets to mount the seat and as it needs only to be in a fixed position i choose to make brackets adjustable a little up and down or back and forwards ignore the horrid rusty nuts and bolts there just to see what i need to buy in stainless later when i get paid.
so far near all the parts are reused or repurposed from my scrap pile or made one handed by me an angle grinder vice and butane blowtorch for bending purposes.
have redesigned the horrid scaffold pole swingaway entirely moved inboard a good deal and now in perfect position for our needs and sturdy and simple just as i like it.pics for helping i shall have more questions soon im sure

also have found what are allegedly the puma 40 hubs but cannot seem to find specs on the sellers sights i need to find the distance between boltholes and ive messaged 2 ebay sellers for specs and not gotten a single reply in a week so anyone help?please.

Non of the stock hubs will be anywhere neat to the rims.

You will need to make an adapter.

But you will end up with a 32 inch wide chair. Wont be much use indoors. You really want these rims and tyres.

they look very expensive and im on very small budget for the entire thing it will take me months of saving as it is,i think i just end up buying the 2nd hand standard wheels and hubs i found a pair of puma 40 wheels and hubs for £60 and keep saving for posh ones later,i did not see a link or source for the wheels on that thread are they from china?i looked on ali express but cant make head nor tail of the way they list stuff,or actual price!,chair has stupidly small wheelbase before 24 inches and top heavy as can be and 12.5x 2 drive wheels and awful weak plastic at that certainly no good for the new motors the puma wheels are 3x8 so can use the michelin s83 tyres same as tinas current chair just big enough i think,thanks for help

BM, I wish you'd stop saying those wheels were variously 7, 9 or 10 pounds - you know that didn't include shipping. Anyway, the current Shirley price for them, delivered, is 153 for 4, or about 38 each which is only marginally cheaper than I can get them from Germany at 40 each delivered.

On Ali express the best I've seen for 'electroplated ' (so not convinced they're alloy) is 18 and shipping at 15ish (20-40 days) so 33 shipped. The ones that say alloy are 22ish so 37odd shipped. Most don't say whether they are tubeless or not so a bit of a gamble.

hi all thanks for the replies i have to save for a good while if i was to go for the shirley wheels that postage is the killer,i reckon someone with a few quid to invest and time on there hands could make a good and useful business importing them wheels and some suitable tyres.
get an engineer to make some semi universal hubs similar to those we used to use for kit car builds as a lad just smaller scale i tell you if i had a few bob i would enjoy doing that need to win lottery first!
i did get a reply from one of the ebay sellers so should have some idea of the compared costs for hubs and wheels,so far 2 used puma 40 wheels no tyres and the 2 hubs for £60 if i collect from essex and use the same michelins s83 for now idk.
i have built up an anti tip system using a mercury tilt switch from an old rover car a used solenoid from a peugeot 406 and some bits of ex salsa anti tips and tested today (chair on a jack)and works good as far as i can see it only deploys when tipped passed a certain point (near the point of no return!) and cost about £3 to make
its a bitch being on such tight budget but does make one learn to improvise and recycle repurpose much more,thanks all

hi all i done a bit more turd polishing over the last week and best of all i found the cause of its most annoying rattle it took me ages fixing one after the other till only one remained, finally pinned it down to the mickey mouse false rivet thing as pictured which acts as the hingepin so seat can fold down im guess ing it once fitted and has lost some spacers etc well its gone in bin and ive instead used an 8mm allen bolt and stainless nut and some anti rattle shims as needed to make a good fit and not rattle at all!
also done away with the half ton of weight from the seat by removing both seat motor/actuators and replaced with lighter threaded bar and ball joints and a simple stainless wingnut so it still folds flat for the car.
made an extra stabiliser bar for the motors as this orientation differs from original and lost the strength provided by the layout of mount forming a box section so needed extra top and bottom.
so far its lost just over 4.5 stone in weight so nearly half a tina! heres a few pics,
