Tie Down System

Postby playafly187 » 21 Apr 2011, 08:00

Hi, just wondering what tie-down system everyone uses in their vans? After some research it appears that my new-to-me van has in-floor L-Track mounts already installed, although no straps were included.

I use a simple electric single point tie down. As most who drive from a wheelchair do. Its as easy as driving in and "clunk!" Away you go! Push a button to release and out you get.

These are common.

I would tend to agree, if it's a vehicle you will be in regularly, and not sharing with other chairs, the single point systems are definitely a big improvement over the straps. My experience with the single point units is limited to playing with them in dealer showrooms, but I currently do a lot of traveling in various paratransit vans, which all use straps.

If the vehicle is configured just right, I can bend WAY over (tends to make me fart  ) and get the front straps and hook them up before the driver does. Haven't found one yet where I can reach the rear straps...

The only advantage the straps have, is that they can be used with pretty much any chair, which is why they are what the paratransits use. The single point systems are a bit fussier, and have to be set up and configured specifically for the chair they will be used with....
