Drive from wheelchair

Postby humbug » 19 May 2011, 12:11

Totally new to this. Need to get a new car to drive from wheelchair, possibly fiat qubo. I have a manual chair with power add on and have been told by most companies that I must have a power chair, it was an expensive chair and I like it. Sirus say I can drive from manual with something fitted to the underside of the chair. Don't know who to believe. Regardless, excuse my ignorance, but I don't want or need a chair with a headrest, what is the situation in a car regarding the headrest, obviously not ideal to drive without one. Is it even legal? Can headrest adaptions be fitted to a car? Can anyone offer advice?

What is the reason for NOT wanting a powerchair? They have (at least good ones have) only advantages, no real downside.

Powered manual chairs have all the disadvantages rolled into one.

See http://www.wheelchairdriver.com/power-o ... lchair.htm

As for driving from a manual chair, it can be done but not ideal. No side (lateral) support, no headrest so get hit from behind and break your neck, (but I dont use one either!) and less stability.

But its just a matter of organising a tie down bolt. No big deal.

I've seen (don't remember details, sorry) some stuff from a European company, I think they may have been Swiss, not sure, but they seemed to have several solutions for driving from a manual chair, including some lockdown systems that didn't look like they used the same low-hanging bolt that the power chairs use - I think it was a sort of hook on a scissors jack that came up and grabbed the axle tube, or one of the other cross-members.

They also had a sort of head and backrest deal that hinged on the door pillar behind the drivers position, sort of like a gate. After the driver wheeled his chair into position, the thing swung into position behind him and provided a more supportive back and a headrest that worked in addition to the existing chair's back... Looked like a clever idea at any rate....

Correction to the above, checked my bookmarks, and found that I'd saved it - http://www.lokkup.com/Default.aspx Not quite as I described it, but close enough....
