Insurance

As usual, every year since I was 16 my motor insurance has gone up again...

The fact that I use it only in summer, and its kept in a large safe driveway, polished :) and looked after by a big german shephard dog with an attitude problem, and only has one driver that will not leave it anywhere dodgy makes no difference. I am tarred with the same brush as the frankly useless AB masses.

It does piss me off. Because its illegal to drive without cover, and because its modified for disability reasons we get penalised due to the lack of companies willing to cover these vans.

480 UK pounds, with limited mileage no frills. :x

Left hand drive, 3.8 litres, imported, modified, not far!

Other than adrian flux theres not many other (affordable) options.

Currently with fish insurance - mobility experts.

Mines with Fish, any driver, protected no claims, £300 excess, no mileage limit, same 3.8 Dodge etc... £500

My problem is £86 to fill the tank every 10 days!

I used to get a good deal on my commercial vehicles and hiab truck from Adrian Flux. Can you redesignate it a moile workshop or plant?

Best,

Import, and or US vehicle, or modified. Not all three!

The only other trick I can think of for reducing premiums is to ask for a higher own accidental damage excess, say £500, should reduce it by 10 - 20%, sometimes more.

Martin

Probably something subtle in your insurance regs that I don't see, but I would think that where you are at a US made vehicle would HAVE to be an "import" by definition - so not sure how it could be an "or"... So modifying it only seems to me like it would be two on the list?

I know that it looks like I'm going to be ending up with a modified van fairly soon, so I'm going to be needing to learn about the ins and outs of insuring one myself, and it will be a challenge given that I haven't insured a 4-wheeled vehicle in over 25 years... One of the interesting questions will be how they look at my driving experience - because of the injury and my applying for a handicapped placard, I was ordered by the registry to show up for (and pay for  ) a "driving competency test" or have my license suspended. Since I can't drive a normal car with no use of my legs, and didn't have a converted vehicle to use, I'm now under suspension... Insurance applications ask if your license has ever been suspended, (usually happens for drunk driving or excessive tickets or accidents) with a big surcharge if you say yes... Also to get re-instated I apparently will have to get a learners permit, and go through the same sort of driving test that a new driver does. It will be interesting to see if my previous driving experience will count, and if I get a problem from the suspension.... (I might raise a stink if they do try to penalize me for it, or hit me with an inexperienced driver rate...)
