Mobility solutions for active wheelchair users

Postby albastru » 12 Jun 2024, 19:10

Hi, I'm based in the UK. I've been to the motability big events and nothing I saw there is addressing my needs. (Well, most of the solutions there are for families taking care of disabled members, where they are not in a rush, where safety is the main concern, good for elderly probably). Some suggestions were to go with a drive from wheelchair solutions, but those were heavily modified vans - start from a 7 seater like a caddy and end up with the wheelchair and 2 seats??
Back to me: I am a wheelchair user, I drive automatics, I can transfer easily into the drivers position. I would like a solution from that point on, to take the wheelchair in the car. I've seen (not on motability) solutions like: 1. pull the folded wheelchair in the car from a side sliding door in the back, I can find what its called. 2. Cassette lift on the side of the car, get in the car with the wheelchair and get into the drivers seat from there. Now I don't need a lower floor as I wont be travelling in the wheelchair. I do like to have the car not heavily adapted (meaning I want the liberty to use the car just as normal (whenever I have help for my wheelchair they will simply put it in the boot and I can use all of the vans seats.) So in the first solution that system I think it should be easy to take out, in the second one with the side lift it would be a matter of putting back 2 seats behind the driver.
I like BM's van with the side ramp, but that is with a lower floor, and with an american van. Anything I'm missing, maybe you guys know of other solutions?
I am active, go to work, go shopping, take my kid to school, most of these I do on my own.
Thank you...

I tried all the adapted cars, transfering to drivers seats etc and its all a damned nightmare at least for me.
So I bought a bigger VW caravelle - no lowered floor, basically stock with a ricon lift in a side door. Again it was so hard to transfer and so slow to do that I practically never bothered to use it.

Then I got my hands on a powerchair... That the "experts" told me I didnt want or need. Well how wrong they were. That totally changed my life. And then I realised that drive from wheelchair vans were just so much easier. And as long as they are properly adapted lowered floor etc, then really good. Provided they are big enough.

The reason I bought a US one is because the same vehicle here, with the same lowered floor etc, was 60k. Imported brand new from the US was 30K inc everything... And that is cheaper than the extra payment you would need from a motobility supplied one. And you get to keep the mobility allowance. So absolutely miles cheaper.

Take a look at the GM converted VW Caravelle Colerado, side lift, fully lowered floor, and this can have a transfer to seat or drive from wheelchair. But if you are using a manual wheelchair then get a decent powerchair and get your life back first! My advice....
