Van Insurance Headache

Postby Ironside » 21 Jun 2012, 18:35

I've got to renew my driving insurance on July 2. I then with Fish insurance ever since I started driving back in the 90s. However, they are getting ridiculously expensive and my latest quote is £949. I managed to get it down to just over £800 last year but I'm getting a little bit fed up to be quite honest. Fish are supposed to be there to help us disabled drivers, they claim that they give 35% discount. The other very annoying thing is that a lot of car insurance companies will not insure vans over 2.5 L, God only knows why. For about 1 min today I was ecstatic, I thought I'd managed to get my insurance for £435 from Churchill. Then we realised that while I was filling in the form, a Mercedes sprinter 218 was not on the list, so I chose a 214. Half a litre is a difference between £430 a year, and no insurance with Churchill at all. I think that is absolutely ridiculous. And it seems that they are not the only insurance company that stop at 2.5 L on vans, one of the other companies I got a quote from also omit the Mercedes sprinter 218 from the list, so I can only assume that their policy is the same as Churchill.

Anyway, I contacted Prestige Insurance who are insurers for disabled drivers. They quoted me £670 for the year, however the access is £750, basically the insurance is useless unless I get into a big accident. The reason for the excess? Because I have valued my vehicle at £50,000, it would actually cost me £70,000 to replace. Apparently they normally only insure vehicles up to the value of £30,000. So that would basically rule out anyone who uses joystick steering, or maybe drives a fairly expensive vehicle but then has to have adaptions fitted.

Well, US import (left hand drive) value 45k, 3.8 litre V6, aftermarket wheels, lowered floor, ramp etc been banned 5 times (!) a few years ago, had several insurance write offs about 13 years ago, 1 current speed conviction, parked on drive, legal, windscreen, 250 excess, £520 which I complained about, and paid up anyway... That was Fish.

Interesting. I think I will get onto Fish tomorrow and find out why they are trying to rob me blind. One thing I haven't mentioned before when getting insurance as I have got an inbuilt fire extinguisher that will automatically come on if I get an engine fire, I think that is probably wise to mention this.

Let's see what they say, I think that the £950 is an automated price

I've got it for just over 500 quid with Fish. The reason why they were quoting me nearly £1000 was because I had "any driver" listed on the policy. I've got that down to just one other name driver which is all I really need anyway. So I'm a little happier now.
