a smal 4x4 for my mum

Postby mous3 » 23 Mar 2014, 09:59

My mum is starting car hunting but it proving tricky she now needs a 4x4 but doesn't want a fule hungry monster as we live at the opposite ends of the m4 with her first grandchild imminent and no road from village to the farm where she will be from the first few months and planing to move thier ASAP her Mazda5 is coming up short now when i visit my Toyota verso can't get within 5 miles of the farm house for most of the year. We park in a barn where my sister leaves me the quad and trailer. Mum will never drive this and with baby in tow It's out of the question. But she needs a car that can take a ramp into the boot and fit my chair- It's back and strap it down still with space for baby seat one large dog me and shopping. We are trying to plan ahead as my condition is degenerateive. The farmer who's barn we use is selling and I am getting to the stage where i will have to go by train as driving so far is making me very sick.
So light folding manual ramp
4x4 car/ estate
Not to fule hungry

There are hundreds of cars out there. So I don't really know where I would start. Other than to say, sooner or later you might need to consider moving somewhere more practical.

Personally I would look at a 4x4 VW quarto Caravelle or transporter, with 2.5 turbo diesel power. They can have tail lift/ramp in side or rear door. And even lowered floor if you need it.

The moving to more practical location is going the other way! They are looking at adjoining small holdings so the farm land can expand with a holiday let and build a ground floor place for me when I need to move back full time but thanks for the ideas will pass them on. I'm praying they get planing for the agriroad but very road so far has been turned down will still need 4x4 when very wet as It's just a reinforced gavel and grass track within a rubber mesh. And will take years to lay and grow tufenough for cars to drive on daily.

Large sharp gravel or crushed rocks, and a heavy road roller, will make a smooth drivable road very cheaply and in about 48 hours. And likely doesn't need any planning either. But it will grow weeds etc. So will need a yearly dose of roundup or similar to keep it clear.

The vw in the clip is quite impressive. In sunny Wales It's more mud than snow. Just had text asking if my chair would fit no the back of Volvo XC90 it will but ramp won't as well. I'm sending her and dad on an off-road driving day for thier birthdays. It cant change the Mazda ground clearance issue but she will get to try loads of cars out and dad may learn that speed is not allways the answer to wet grass and smooth granite. My personal long term option is a nice new electric quad and not a new motability car we will keep my verso when it's up for replacement and get the winch upgraded. The farm is off grid solar and hydro electric, they export more than they use
