EZ LOCK Solenoid

The solenoid on my EZ Lock died. I just called them and they will only sell to a dealer and you know how much that will cost. Seems crazy. Any ideas on another source. Mine is so old can't see a part number/manufacture, etc

Take it out. Look for part muber or spec or measure it. Then search. Why on earth wont they sell you spares? They me sick, anything to be difficult.

You have checked that:
1. its not jamming on the burred edges and that the mechanism moves freely?
2. electrical connections and microswitches?
3. resistance of the solenoid?
4. actually connected 12V to the solenoid directly? Because they seem pretty substantial electrically.

The only thing that can realistically burn that out would be if it remained powered up due to mechanically jamming (the burred edges, bolted to tight, etc, or a failed or incorrectly positioned microswitch. Its more likely a bad switch, bad connection, or mechanical positioning or friction problems. Operate it on the bench with a screwdriver instead of the chairs bolt. And test the solenoid alone.

Solenoid does nothing more than the manual release cable does. Used that for years.

Its bad when your nipples fall off. You should watch final destination.

Well after many gyrations in that EZ Lock wouldn't sell the solenoid directly to me and the local dealer wanted $200+ to replace it, I finally figured out who made it for EZ Lock. When I contracted them, not only wouldn't they sell me one but said the specs were proprietary by EZ Lock and they couldn't help. After a little research I found the solenoid below on Amazon. I had to mount it slightly differently but it works great and was cheap.

Excellent thread chaps, full of useful info. I too have used the manual overide for years and never bother using the electrical method.
But Burgermans advice about having more than one means of exit hit a nerve, as I'm thinking of installing some with just the manual method of release, just because it's easy.
