Did it work?

Postby Clumsy--Fairy » 31 Mar 2025, 08:42

Hey people,

Have I finally done it? Has my account started working? It looks like it might have <much excitement>..

Hey people.. I have been trying to get an account working on here for a really long time, and I think it might have actually worked this time, though I haven't received a confirmation email so.... Let's keep everything crossed!!

I've recently moved to Cheltenham and I drive a chair that I can't remember the name of and I'm too comfy (and probably lazy) to go look up the name of it.. I'd really like to do some modding to it, but my biggest goal is to build an off road / on road (and silly fast chair) for getting about. I'm kinda sad that the mobility scooters and bikes are having all the fun, so I want to get in on the action. I did some modding to my old mobility scooter and got 30mph out of it, and a long time ago now I built an electric recumbent trike, and those were pretty simple. I'm hoping I can find the right parts to screw together to make something silly, and maybe find a local makers space to fabricate anything that needs turning, or milling etc..

Any way, it's so nice to be here, I've been so excited about being a part of this place since I found it about 3 years ago, but I've always had issues with getting past the signup process.. Any way, I won't know for certain if this is working till I press send, so wish me luck!!!

Cirus.

It was one of those Chinese import scooters, from GreenPower, I kinda got one just as they started arriving in the uk. They were pretty rare, but they are all over the place now. and I just pulled out the motor, and the transaxle and a lot of the electronics, and replaced the battery with a 96v battery, and swapped out the motor and the driver etc with a load of stuff from Aliexpress meant for I think they are for tuk tuks.. They were just jelly bean parts, It was like 5+ years ago now, I guess it's even easier now they have gotten so popular..

I'm guessing doing the same with a chair is going to be REALLY tricky because of the way the motor and drive train work, and it's not like there's an easy way round it..

You're the expert though Burgerman, I'm REALLY hoping to get a plan together to build something silly fast. The only way I've thought you could get round the drive train issue is to use eBike hubs, but the problem would be just supporting the wheel from one side. I know on my trike that's not a problem, but there's another wheel (on a trike to take the load), and it's not being battered at silly speeds over potholes and the like..

Ebike hubs do not have the starting torque or resolution for a powerchair if direct drive. If geared they then dont have the speed.

The chinesium brushless motors and stuff, work ok with scooters, cars, scoorters.

The closest you will get is a robotics controller and higher voltage. so read the rather long roboteq pinned at the top of the forum.

But theres a LOT to learn, understand, and to configure and program. Its about 40x harder than a scooter. And you still have casters... They dont like speed.

Caster chatter:

45V roboteq controller, this is 16mph and thats too much.

I know it's not going to be an easy journey, I'm fairly OK when it comes to the electronics, and the coding side of things, I'm pretty new when it comes to the machining, and the engineering required. I'm kinda broke, so I only have one choice if I want something, and that's to work out how to make it myself..

I've got a Quantum Rehab 4front2 at the moment, and it was trying to get a service manual for it that led me to this amazing site you have put together.. I'm SO excited to get on here because it's by far in the way the best resource I've seen for this sort of stuff.. I kinda hope I can help out in time.. I love the machines you have put together on the main site. I REALLY hope in a few years time I'll have something to show off too..

I haven't looked yet, but do you know if you have any resources for the chair I have? I did try contacting Quantum, and a few other companies a couple of years ago but to no avail (unsurprisingly) I ended up getting stuck outside Newport railway station last year having accidentally locked myself out of the chair, and I called the company asking for help, and to start with they were quite adamant they weren't going to help me and I needed to contact a service centre, but I eventually managed to get the nice lady on the phone to give in, and find the manual online for me and get me out of the pickle I was in <blushes>.

Any way, I will get to work reading, seriously a HUGE thank you. for putting this place together and looking after it.

The big issue with all chairs is programming. And prides stuff at least as the OEM (actualy useful) level is kept under lock and key. So that would prevent me ever buying one unless I was going to charge that system.

As for parts no idea.

Its all metal and motors. Cant be that difficult to get, mod, adapt, ebay etc.

Yeah @Burgerman, I don't intend doing anything much with the chair I have at the moment other than use it as it was intended. I'd love to get under the hood on it, but it's not what I would use for the project chair. I am planning to follow your lead on the main site for the project, IE get a base that you (or others) would recommend, and then build on it from there. I'm guessing it is going to take me a good few years to bring all the parts together, and get it setup.. I'm kinda thinking of going REALLY simple when it comes to the chair part (the butt to base interface).. I really want to make a chair I can bomb about on, and know it will hold up.. I doubt I'll ever get more than 20mph out of one, and that's fine, as long as I can leave the mobility scooters getting small in the mirrors I'll be happy <grin>.
