BM3 come to me

Postby jonl60 » 29 Oct 2015, 12:18

Hi,

I'm Jon from Bridgwater, Somerset UK. I have multiple myeloma, a blood cancer which is eating my spine. I can walk around, in a lot of pain so I bought a used 4 wheel scooter thingy for about £600. Then I saw the BM3 and wanted one right away even though I cant drive it into my car.

I was a cloud physicist in a previous life. This might sound a bit stuffy but in reality I had to turn my hand to designing hardware, probes and electronics for mounting on our aircraft on which I flew on all over this planet doing collaborative field trials with other met services and universities.

Currently I am retired and making a 3.5 inch Evening Star steam loco and ciurrently converting my mill to CNC. But now I've seen this BM3 I want to build one instead.

Any short cuts any one knows about how to achieve this would be welcome and yes I have read and still reading all the web details that John has posted here.

That's me, byee

If you are a Physicist with electronics (or even just electrical) knowledge and can build engineering models then you are already well equipped to build your own version of one of BM's power chairs, but tweaked to suit YOU. The best short cut is to buy something s/h from eBay, or a clapped-out trade in from a local Dealer (they never know how to mend these and end up with a lock-up full) and then experiment. When you've worked out from experiment what you want, start buying new parts and build a durable, reliable version. It is just an iterative process. I've still not got it right (it's all choices and compromises) but my power chairs work well for me and knock spots off everything I see people using around here.
I'd be ashamed with a comparison to one of BM's chairs though. You wouldn't call any of mine show-standard.

They don't need to be show standard to work. But they must be built mechanically to the same high standards.

Show standards is actually easy if you are building them properly though. Just a bit more detail/effort.

Like this one.
