PC help needed

Postby LROBBINS » 29 Sep 2025, 14:54

While getting ready to record the gathering in honor of Rachi's memory, I've installed OBS Studio. On one machine, running Win10 iOT LTSC, the webcam is not recognized. Checking with "https://webcamtests.com/check" it first shows:
webcam 1.jpg

After clicking on the allow access button, however, gives this:
webcam 2.jpg

Searching whether within Firefox or on the web, and despite checking several of the suggested causes and cures, I haven't a clue how to eliminate this DOMexception error.

Any suggestions?
Lenny

P.S. all drivers have been updated.

I have no idea.
Webcam works fine on LTSC here?
Some setting somewhere must be blocking it.

I have practically all security stuff inc the defender nonsense disabled.

Click the tiny camera icon in the address bar. Click autoplay. Make sure it's not set to "block audio and video". Ublockorigin can sometimes cause similar issues. I haven't ever had it but have read it can.

Installing the latest Java didn't help.

Will wrote "Click the tiny camera icon in the address bar". Huh? I don't see any camera icon. Can you upload a screen shot to show me what it should look like?

Depends on your settings and version. I don't have a webcam hooked up on this work computer, but three little lines appear here where I circled when the webcam is requested. Click it and the permissions settings pops up. Or just type cntrl + I to get to the same place if you don't have the icon. Make sure that "allow audio and video" is selected next to autoplay.

If that doesn't work then I don't know. That's the only hoops I've had to jump through to get mine to work.

No icon, at least not on the it. site, but ctrl-I does let me switch autoplay from default to "both audio and video". Still get the DOMexception error though. BTW-I've now checked, and there's the same error on both of my HP Spectre with Win10-LTSC, but that's not surprising given that they are clones one of the other.

No icon on mine either!
LTSC with cam works as expected. SOMETHING on yours is "securing" it... Maybe nothig to do with the browser (I have firefox and ublock origin, blocktube, AI block etc too.)

It didnt work until I told FIREFOX that I wanted to allow that webcam site to access my camera in firefox settings.

And on the screenshot, left side, in windows settings to "allow apps" to access it too.

Then I moved my ugly mug so you can see a pulse jet on my ceiling... Now it works.
Crappy camera though. Dont normally use it...

The icon I was talking about is on BM's last screenshot. I just got home and tried mine to see. I had to click the lines then click allow and it came on. So, I'm no help beyond that. Sorry.

Those lines are just he firefox menu. A drop down, many options. Another screen.

Incidentally, back to RC, that thing on the ceiling was fearsomely loud, burns 2 litres of kerosene in 3 minutes, doesent throttle... And quite fast. 30 years back.

Not the menu icon. Circled. To the left of the web address. It's not there all the time, only when certain permissions are requested - depending on your settings.

If the issue is within Firefox, I would try it using Chrome.

Its not. Or mine wouldnt work.

Chrome is a tool of google designed to track, and follow you where you are the moneymaker. The product. To be used. I wouldnt have that (or edge) on my PC if you paid me! Likewise I wouldnt have or sign up to any google or Microsoft account. I only ever sign up to here, my bank, paypal, amazon and ebay. Those 5 are safe once you block all ads and sort out an AI blocker. And never anything else.

I just tried it again.
https://webcamtests.com/check

It finds my FPV cam, my Nikon Z8 by wireless, my built in web cam and an adobe something cam? And Corel screen capture cam, and a few other software related cams dont know what those are but they dont work... And the built in "integrated webcam" that does And my front door cam.

The PC I'm on now has no trouble at all finding the built in webcam, but the OS is Win11 (ugh, but I have no choice as the audio board is not even enumerated under Win10).

The Win10 machines throw the DOMexception error with the internal webcam, but properly with an ancient USB webcam. As I actually intend to use a speaker-following USB servo camera and microphones, I'll wait until Thursday when I have the hardware here to see if it will be recognized.

In win 10 or 11 you must have allow apps to access microphone enabled in browser and windows settings as well as webcam...

It is, but it is also the better performing browser for most users.

I have been using Firefox as my default browser for over 20 years, with no script and either adblockplus or ublobk origin for most of this time. But I cannot deny that Chrome is great these days and much better for the average user.

How can it know anything about me?

I dont have or use or sign up to or log into anything google, msn, apple, etc in decades. I systematically block everything outgoing in windows, tons of software, etc.
Not even search. Nothing. Same with everything microsoft, or apple. No accounts, no logins, no "apps" no webmail, nothing at all. Add the use of a VPN in my modem, custom DNS servers, and my PC(s) and a hosts file about 8 feet long to stop practically anything connecting in the background, and a well maintained firewall... For decades.

And its hard to see what they can possibly know about me. I doubt they know I exist. They are even blocked from here (server in the US) via robots.txt too. Plus the bots are shown a different set of results if new, or not blocked.

And they permanantly try and succeed in blocking ad blockers...
Google Chrome has updated to Manifest V3, a new Chrome extension specification that will limit ad blockers. As a result, uBlock Origin was forcibly removed from the browser and didn't qualify for our list. Learn more here.

Google is endlessely trying to force me to watch ads. I cant stand them. I never saw an ad in years. And ublock origin allows me to remove all sorts of popups, warnings, unwanted clutter etc quite apart from ads...

So how is it "better" than firefox?

Here is an example.
Firefox.

This is Youtube. Even the logo is GONE. No log in, no clutter or links to social crap, at all. No google recommended content, nothing except what I search for with all AI or personal recommendations gone. No user comments, no like or dislike, nothing other than the content I want. Everything else wastes bandwidth slows things down tracks, and isnt wanted. Not only that - no ads, nothing "sponsored" no ads in the content or on the vids at all. Or the page. Just the video I choose. And this simply works. About 20% of the web/utube is computer AI generated garbage to slap ads on.

Look.

No crap. And no user comments...

And it thinks I am in the Isle of man. And it thinks I am using edge!

Note that theres zero AI generated garbage in the results either. Becase of another bllocker...

I might add that the gov here added that age consent thing to all the porn sites, and blocked 1000s of sites offering free music, movies, software, etc. I was unaffected. All still work as normal... I even use the gov websites to get the list of banned sites to find the best ones! Government safety bill... They really are retards.

It seems to perform better overall, load certain sites faster, have less general bug/lag/compatability issues. Transfering browser data from one PC/install to another is also easier.

I have no plans to switch from Firefox myself, but for other people, I tend to install Chrome as the default, as it results in less follow-up issues/calls.

But that involves signing up to the devil in the first place!

I do that with firefox by transfering a few copy and paste backup files.

What I actually do is make a C:\disk clone of my perfectly configured computer, years of fine tuning and mountains of up to date software as a 140GB backup file. With Macrium...
Complete with all software and config, everything. Years of fine tuning. And then just deploy that bootable disk to any laptop of desktop PC. On boot It sits and thinks for a bit, says new hardware recognised, and then boots. I then remove any uneeded hidden drivers etc or dell specific stuff, and install any missing drivers for things like graphics or fingerprint readers, and we are done!
A fully cloned configured system. All wifi passwords, all web/bank details, etc Already up to date ready to use on a seperate different PC.In 20 mins.

Obviously on LTSC IoT till 2032 and beyond. I keep a copy of the same thing, on a 4TB NVMe USB drve. That has all drivers needed for all 4 of my PCs and so can be used as a drive for any of them as a bootable USB disk... THAT is the easy non devil way.

One of the main reasons I do a re-install for people is because of years worth of junk files/programs/drivers etc, so copying it all over just brings all the headaches with it.

Copying the local/roaming folders for Firefox is what I do on my own systems.

Other people...

I have a version of my perfect setup, and have it totally de personalised. So super clean, non of my stuff or passwords, and all the software and fine tuning remains. As a compressed 110Gb backup file.

I deploy THAT to anyone that wants a computer fixing. Its got rather a lot of software on it. It can basically do anything. no nags, no junk, no prompts to upgrade, no trial versions, just the best / newest of everything but "adjusted" a little shal we say so it works properly... That means its the same as my daily computer, but totally vanilla and non of my personal data in any shape.

So like it of not they end up with 10 LTSC IoT and enough high end software to sink a battleship. All configured properly and so no phoning home, no subscriptions, no nags, and nothing to log onto. That takes me about 20 mins to add any missing drivers (I have a 50GB folder with every driver under the sun that uses SDI to add anything missing in seconds).

Then in device damager, show hidden and delete the lot. Check bios settings, defrag, bench and test, burn in, return...
I refuse to do anything else. If they bring it here thats what it gets.
