About twenty years ago I was coming out of an elevator at the Charlotte Observer. Elevator stopped on the third floor, from there you had a glass wall to view the printing press and a rather long escalator to get down to the first floor.
This was before I traded my legs for wheels so I stepped out of the elevator and then this young black guy in a wheelchair shoots past me. He scoots over to the escalator, spins 180°, BACKS onto the moving stairway, hfs his rear wheels tight to the step he's on an leans forward (actually, uphill. looking at me. and the astounded look on my face.)
He gets to the bottom, spins around and hauls ass out of the building.
Ramps, schmamps.
