Old abandoned chair. Left in garage

Postby Burgerman » 02 Jun 2021, 16:52

For over a year. Yestereday my carer plugged it in to charge. Obviously No Go! I measured voltage and 6v in series. So to my mind the battery is now junk. Was pretty bad when last used so dont care.

So connected a shirly power supply (ZXD) via anderson. Set to 50A and in parallel so 14.6V. After 6 hours the current increased from a miserable 2A up to the 50A limit. Not smelling great, and so I left it on a 5A charge overnight and all day today. Expecting a disasterous melted battery. Today the garage smalled of rotten eggs. Battery looked a bit inflated. Martin convinced it will be fine. So I sent him to the end of the street in it. He starteed well. Had slowed some by the end of the drive and made it around 150 feet before it stopped completely. So range is now 200 feet.

With this in mind I am loath to spend good money on lead batteries - at least good ones - for a very unloved chair I only use every year for a few days while cleaning or pressure washing the drive or spray painting etc. It spent a full year out in the rain so its not exactly pretty!

So am looking all day now for a cheap but workable battery for the right money.

And these seem OK ish, good cycle life, rerasonable impedance although not as good as MK and nowhere near as good as odyssey. But then its at half the price.

If you use them only for spray painting and pressure washing you should get the max recycle life from them. I've used this brand on my stairlift and found them satisfactory. In fact I have a couple ex stairlift batteries I retired in 2015 that still give serviceable life for pumping up tyres etc.

Yes. I actually almost ordered a set is $59 leisure batts. But I cant bring myself to do it. 150 cycles to 50% like most leisure batts. Complete junk really!

Theres these cheapies too. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152632396375

Again nowhere near as good as odyssy or MK gel. But for a backup chair or something they would do at a push. High impedance though. But even so can do higher currents for heavy users, hills etc. But only 350 to 380 cycles at 80% dod. So for my use these may be better. 28 hours for a full recharge?
