windows 11. 3 weeks as daily driver.

Postby Burgerman » 18 Nov 2021, 13:22

And I just formated that hard disk. Nothing wrong with it, just that its not LTSC version. Its the version that almost everyone else uses. And just like windows 10 I cant stand the consumer or pro versions. Too much crap in it. How the hell do people cope with it?

So will be waiting a few months for the LTSC or the IoT version. Then will switch to 11 properly.

Yes. Its the version of windows, which is 10 at the moment that is used by air traffic control, banks, embedded systems etc.

It doesent phone home, has no metro ap crap, no store, no browser or any of the other built in garbage, no ads, no bundled garbage, and no feature updates etc only security upsates and those are infrequent. Its not meant as a typical users operating system as microsoft dont make any money from their garbage that is built in. No bing, no anything that YOU dont install.

But being a corporate enterproze thing, windows 11 enterprize LTSC is not out until middle next year. So I was testing the normal version of 11. The one intended for normal people.

LTSC is just better in every way. Microsoft dont want you to have it!

Windows home, prof, and long ago ultimate etc are all basically the same with one or two small options changed. The LTSC version is much much different. Was intended for reliability, stability, and few if any upgrades ever. So only well tested (after its been rolled out to all the other versions) essential security updates.

And at least 1/3rd of it "missing"... All that telemetry and pushing you to do this and that. Pop ups "helping" you. And all those terrible metro aps etc do not exist by design. Its a safe, reliable blank canvas for YOU to use!

Do you want a copy?

And unlike all the other windows 10 versions, LTSC is supported till 2029. So I my just never bother with 11...

Desktop Windows 10 Support Ends October 2025
(Support for the less commonly used Long Term Support Channel releases Windows 10 2019 LTSC and Windows 10 IoT 2019 LTSC will end on January 9, 2029.) After Windows 10 support ends, you'll need to upgrade to Windows 11 to keep receiving security updates.

I'm trying Win 10 LTSC 2021 on a test PC, and it runs sweetly. You'll need this version for Alder Lake.

Steve,

Didn't know that the 2021 version of LTSC had finally been released. Do you have a link for where I can get a copy?

Comments from the LTSC users page...
So since 2019 version gets longer support, to 2029 instead of 2026, and in light of the following then I may stil stick with the 2019 release.

Reply

A bunch of new Defender hooks into everything. Tracks Firefox usage now too if you let it. If you used to install LTSC to avoid MS spyware you’re going to have to disable a lot of stuff in this new version.

I completely removed Windows Defender from LTSB 2016 because it kept slowing things down and getting in my way, always scanning files (especially downloads) as if I don’t know what I’m doing and need Microshaft to tuck me into bed at night and whisper to me that my files are safe.

I’ll have to test if my usual methods still work in LTSC 2021. At least it comes with WDDM v2.9 so unless support for W10 is dropped altogether in favor of W11, the latest graphics drivers should still continue to work for the foreseeable future. Previously I had to move to LTSC 2019 on my HTPC because compatible drivers for my GTX 1650 would not install on LTSB 2016. Maybe related to the Universal Driver API introduced with WDDM v2.5 (Windows 10 1809).

It will be the last half decent version of Windows. Things are getting worst with 11. Disabling Defender and all the cloud-based crap is getting much harder. Windows 11 was designed by marketing dept folks who wanted crap that looked pretty but was not functional at all. Windows 11 is the least product version of Windows in a long time. More clicks, more useless nonsense thrown at you.

And I absolutely agree with win 11 comments..
And after looking at 11 for weeks, and microsoft ramming that cloud based crap and paid office, etc and then forcing hundreds of embedded operating system links to open in that edge browser no matter what you set as your prefered browser, (firefox) etc then windows 11 is a definte no no.

PM sent to BM and Lenny.

I customise my install image and rip out Defender before it tries to run, that way MS can't delete stuff like no-CD patches for games I play and also game trainers in SP mode.

So with windows 11 having more issues than 10 regarding both its interface and browser war - pushing its own browser and trying to force users to use it, then its a definite no from me.

Same with all the usual windows 10 systems.

LTSC is just so much better in every way. It is de crappified from the beginning.
As for your removing the built in antivirus, no need. I have two registry click and forget files. One disables defender. One enables it So you can run it every xmas if you decide!

For all those interested in updating their LTSC 2019 operating systems to the just released 2021 version, you might be interested in the following. My LTSC 2019 was very heavily personalised, 2 years of fine tuning, tweaking. Such as tracking down over 200 things that write log files continuously in windows. And much much more - Not enough time or memory to explain it all now!

When upgrading to the 2021 version its easy. If you choose keep my files and settings. It takes an age. But kept everything as it was. Programs, settings, and about 1000 mods and changes. I cant tell its been done other than a few operating system differences.

I dd notice that the windows folder is now 8GB smaller! :clap And it added a 1GB rescue folder on my drive. Which I dont need. So its gone. And the windows partition made bigger instead. Then you need to remove windows.old folder by using cleanup. Or its locked. And then you are back to square 1 wih a perfectly configured but newer system.

Is all that necessary?
Why so many adjustments?

Because my computers all use the exact same image (as a backup file by macrium) across 3 laptops and my desktop PC. I deploy the same copy of my PC or laptop to all of them. Complete with all my customizations, drivers, software, updates, and fine tuning, and work, software store etc etc.

So as I use windows for years I notice and change countless things. For e.g I enable and disable 30 or 40 unwanted services. In the way the programs and other software is configured. Maybe a very complete set of file extentions that are opened by specific software. Maybe browser options, and endless add blocker and other unwanted bits of websites "removed". And as mentioned I dont want endless log files being written continuously all day long. Windows has literally hundreds of those at a rolling 40 to 100MB continually. Thats hundreds of GB being written to my SSDs over the years, wearing them out for nothing! Not to mention slowing the PC and preventing it idling at 0% CPU. At low voltage. I dont want my antivirus programs running unless I choose. Hundreds of registry changes to make things work how I want them to work. Colours, menu options, thousands of configurations to the hosts file to stop my less than legal software phoning home, etc etc etc.

My windows does what I want. Yours tells you what to do and wastes most of your cpu cycles and responds randomly!

It would need to be a backup of MY computer! And that includes all my personal stuff, banking details, 70GB of actual work going back to 1980s, and all my hundreds of stored passwords etc. So yes I could send you a copy. And yes you could deploy that to your PC or laptop all pre configured. And then you might need to add a few drivers on bootup. Or maybe not windows may just download them. But I am not likely to do that am I?

You WANT the secuity updates. You want bug fixes and updated drivers that cure issues. You dont want "feature" updates which on all the normal Windows versions is almost all of it. Thats how the sell you stuff, track you, force you to use their services..

windows has gotten worse in that area - too much shit -

but if you think just cleaning up windows makes you untrackable - long way to go - everyone is trackable - if not from windows - cell phones - house phones

anything and everything - they know -

i just watched this on netflix - Coded Bias - check it out - i think there was a part from the UK london - they track everyone - every face - person in the open etc,

unless you live under a rock and never come out from there - and even then they can find you

future dosnt look good for humans and privacy - thats been long gone -

Not me. I just downloaded the whole of the data that the biggest tracking company in the world has on me from the start to now. Google. Was warned it would be several GB. It was 2 lines of text. And wrong too!

I dont have a smart phone, and no landline.
